Gachagua Mocks Ruto’s Buffalo Milk Proposal During High-Profile Meeting With Opposition Leaders

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly mocked President William Ruto’s suggestion that Kenyans consider consuming buffalo milk to address nationwide dairy shortages caused by ongoing drought.

Speaking on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at his Wamunyoro home following his return from an extended tour of the United States, Gachagua turned the President’s summit remarks into a political joke while hosting delegation leaders from the Linda Mwananchi movement.

“I came back home and found that you have been told to start taking buffalo milk. I am at my home, Wamunyoro. Because there are so many buffaloes at Hombe Forest, I have sent young men to see if they can get some milk so that I can get enough to prepare for my visitors,” Gachagua quipped.

President Ruto originally floated the idea on October 8, 2026, during the Agriculture and Food Security Transformation Summit at Jamhuri Park, asking;

“If others are milking them, why can’t we do the same? What is wrong with that? We need to diversify our sources of milk.”

Opposition Alignment Ahead of 2027

Gachagua’s lighthearted commentary coincided with formal political discussions at his residence with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and other Linda Mwananchi leaders as opposition figures seek to build a unified front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Addressing his political comeback, the former Deputy President stated that he returned to re-energize opposition strategy and coordinate a collective push to challenge the current administration.

“I returned after our people said politics had stalled and needed to be re-ignited,” Gachagua stated. “Our cousins from Abaluhya visited me. They said that they would like us to unite to look for power so that we can kick out Kasongo [Ruto] because the country has continued to deteriorate.”

Consensus Candidate and Party Strengthening

Gachagua confirmed openness to consensus talks across the opposition spectrum to settle on a single presidential challenger, citing himself, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as prospective options.

In addition to talks on opposition unity, Gachagua outlined plans to expand his political outfit, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), with a target of securing over 100 parliamentary seats to safeguard his constituency’s interests and protect leaders—including former President Uhuru Kenyatta—from political attacks.

He concluded by teasing further high-profile visits to his Wamunyoro residence in the coming weeks, maintaining his running joke regarding preparations for incoming political guests.
