Atletico Madrid will head into the international break sitting second in the La Liga table after beating city rival Real Madrid 2-1 at the Metropolitano Stadium on Sunday.

Alex Grimaldo converted from the spot, and Jonathan David also found the back of the net for Atletico in a game where Real defender Dean Huijsen was sent off for bringing down Giuliano Simeone ‌inside the area as ​the last defender.

Antonio Rudiger headed in a free kick ‌in the 89th minute, but Real’s ​response came too late.

The result leaves Jose Mourinho’s Real third in the standings with 15 points, six behind leader Barcelona and one behind Atletico.
