Indonesia seeks to expand handicraft exports to Canada

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Trade Ministry is seeking to expand handicraft exports to Canada, particularly baskets, furniture, and various products made from natural fibers.

Director General of National Export Development Fajarini Puntodewi said these products had strong potential to gain a larger share of the Canadian market, provided Indonesian businesses strengthened their competitiveness and production capacity.

Speaking at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Tuesday, she identified food and beverage products, machinery, electronics, and palm oil derivatives as Indonesian commodities in demand in Canada.

Puntodewi encouraged Indonesian businesses to capitalize on these opportunities by leveraging existing bilateral trade instruments, particularly the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (I-CA CEPA), which is scheduled to enter into force on December 1, 2026.

The I-CA CEPA is Indonesia’s first comprehensive economic partnership agreement with a North American country and Canada’s first such agreement with a Southeast Asian nation.

The agreement is set to take effect following the exchange of instruments of ratification by the two countries in October 2026.

Bilateral trade between Indonesia and Canada reached US$3.51 billion in the January-August 2026 period, an increase of 15.5 percent compared with the same period in 2025. As of August 2026, Indonesia’s exports to Canada were valued at US$1.12 billion, while imports from Canada totaled US$2.39 billion.

In 2025, bilateral trade totaled US$4.36 billion, up from US$3.58 billion in 2024. Indonesia exported US$1.70 billion worth of products to Canada and imported US$2.67 billion.

Indonesia’s main exports to Canada include machinery, electrical equipment, rubber and rubber products, footwear, knitted goods, and apparel. Meanwhile, its imports from Canada are dominated by wheat, fertilizers, wood pulp, mineral fuels, and salt, sulfur, and lime.
