Comelec wants vulnerable sectors to be able to vote a week before election day

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is pushing for "vulnerable sectors" to be allowed to vote a week ahead of election day to cater their needs and convenience.
Comelec chairperson George Garcia made the statement during the Kapihan sa Manila Bay forum on Wednesday.
“Sana makaboto sila isang linggo bago mag-eleksyon. May sarili silang dedicated na presinto na hindi na sila pipila nang napakahaba, na kasama ng mga regular na botante," Garcia said.
(Hopefully, they can vote a week before the election, with dedicated polling precincts so they won’t have to wait in long lines alongside regular voters.)
He added that the setup would be similar to the absentee voting provided to security personnel, media workers, and others who will be serving during the elections.
Sectors deemed vulnerable include senior citizens, pregnant women, and persons with disabilities.
Currently, Comelec is implementing early voting hours for the vulnerable sector.
According to the poll body, 74 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots in the 2028 National and Local Elections.
By November 2028, an additional one million voters are expected to vote for the 2028 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the poll body said.
Comelec said it open the voter registration from November 2026 to July 30, 2027.
Menwhile, the filing of candidacy for the 2028 national and local elections will be from September 20-26, 2027. — BM, GMA News
