‘Why?’ — Richarlison reacts with crying emoji after Spurs snub

Tottenham forward Richarlison has reacted angrily to being left out of the squad for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool, posting a “Why?” message alongside a crying emoji on social media.

According to the BBC, the Brazil international shared a screenshot of a post about his omission before adding the brief message, amid growing uncertainty over his future at the north London club.

Richarlison’s latest reaction comes days after a proposed return to Brazilian side Vasco da Gama collapsed, with Tottenham reportedly agreeing a fee for the 29-year-old but failing to reach an agreement on personal terms before Brazil’s transfer window closed.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi had earlier said he tried to convince Richarlison to remain at the club and offered him a contract extension.

“At the start of this season, I spoke to him many times to convince him to stay and he didn’t want to,” De Zerbi said.

“I can’t go every day to pray for him to stay.”

The Italian added that the situation between the player and the club was private, saying: “The relationship, the problem is between the player and the club.”

Richarlison had also been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad after his proposed £35 million deadline-day move to former club Everton collapsed over personal terms.

The forward is understood to be exploring his options and wants to be released from the remaining nine months of his contract, although Spurs have an option to extend the deal by another year.

His latest omission comes at a difficult time for Tottenham, who are yet to win a Premier League match under De Zerbi and have failed to score in their opening four league games.

Richarlison was Tottenham’s leading scorer last season with 12 goals in all competitions, while he has also scored four times in seven appearances against Liverpool since joining Spurs from Everton in 2022.

The 29-year-old has 54 caps for Brazil and previously played for Watford and Everton.
