PUTRAJAYA, Oct 28 — The Federal Territories Department (JWP) aims to reduce the number of flash flood hotspots in Kuala Lumpur from 14 to 10 this year through various mitigation measures.

Its director-general Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain said the target would be pursued through effective mitigation efforts and cooperation among relevant agencies, particularly the Kuala Lumpur Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID).

He said the measures included river dredging and the construction of on-site retention ponds to channel water directly into the ponds.

“Insya-Allah, these ongoing efforts will help address the problem more effectively,” he told reporters after officiating the Federal Territories Disaster Risk Management Day, held in conjunction with National Preparedness Month, here today.

Earlier, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Fadlun Mak Ujud said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) had identified 14 flood hotspots in the federal capital for focused mitigation efforts.

The areas included Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah, Sultan Iskandar Highway, Bulatan Datuk Onn and Jalan Tun Sambanthan.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Azmi said JWP and relevant agencies in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan were well prepared for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL).

He added that all flood warning sirens and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras across the Federal Territories were in good working order. — Bernama
