Kedah RTD issues 4,447 summonses in foreign driver crackdown

ALOR STAR: The Kedah Road Transport Department (RTD) issued 4,447 summonses to foreign drivers during an operation targeting foreign drivers conducted from June 17 until yesterday.
Kedah RTD director Stien Van Lutam said the summonses were issued for various offences under relevant laws.
He said 164 vehicles were seized during the same period, comprising 128 motorcycles, 28 cars, and eight other vehicles.
Stien added that the state RTD Enforcement Division launched a special crackdown, Ops Khas Gempur Pewa, on Sept 28 to intensify enforcement actions.
"Within two days until yesterday, 115 vehicles were inspected, and 28 summonses were issued for various offences," he said in a statement today.
He added that 16 vehicles involving Rohingya drivers were seized during the crackdown.
Main offences detected throughout the operation included driving without a valid driving licence, expired Motor Vehicle Licences (LKM) or road tax, and driving without valid insurance coverage.
"Besides taking action against foreign drivers, Kedah RTD is also monitoring local vehicle owners who allow foreigners to drive their vehicles without complying with set regulations," Stien said.
Offences identified among local owners included allowing individuals to drive without a valid licence, allowing vehicles to be used with expired LKM or road tax, and allowing vehicles to be used without valid or active insurance coverage.
Stien reminded vehicle owners not to take matters lightly or hand over their vehicles to any individual without ensuring all legal requirements are met.
