Jakarta Governor to meet New York Mayor for urban policy talks

Translate

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung has departed for New York, United States, to fulfill an invitation from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani to attend the Urban 20 (U20) Mayors Summit 2026 and discuss solutions to pressing urban issues.

"This visit serves as an opportunity for Jakarta to strengthen its role in global city-to-city cooperation, while also bringing back knowledge and partnerships that can be applied to improve public services and the quality of life for Jakarta's residents," Pramono said in a statement on Friday.

In an invitation letter dated July 27, 2026, Mayor Mamdani invited Governor Pramono to join global city leaders at the U20 forum in New York to address key challenges—including housing affordability, climate change, human mobility, and economic development.

The U20 is an engagement group of the G20 that serves as a platform for major city leaders to share policy recommendations and urban development strategies.

During his visit, Pramono is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Mayor Mamdani on Sunday (September 20) to discuss direct cooperation in public transportation, air quality improvement, coastal resilience, waste management, and food affordability.

Beyond the core U20 agenda, Pramono is set to address a "Heat Roundtable" organized by C40 Cities, Harvard University’s Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability, and the Atlantic Council’s Climate Resilience Center.

The panel will join leaders, including the mayors of Paris and Freetown, to tackle urban heat mitigation and climate adaptation strategies.

The Jakarta Provincial Government is also scheduled to sign a Letter of Intent with New York University (NYU).

The partnership focuses on academic exchange, event management, and sports marketing expertise to build Jakarta's capacity in hosting international events.
