The search for Ajit Agarkar's replacement as the fifth and final member of the selection committee is set to reach its conclusion, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly completing the interview process on Friday, according to a report. Former India cricketers Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjpe, who are part of the BCCI's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), posed an interesting set of futuristic questions in front of the candidates, including the situation surrounding former captain Rohit Sharma.
Agarkar reportedly sought an extension from BCCI, but his wish was not granted due to his stance on Rohit's future with the team, where he was not keen for the 39-year-old to play next year's ODI World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, the CAC members sought the applicants' views on Rohit's ODI future.
The selectors' revised opinion on Rohit reflected in India's squad selection for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, with backup opener Yashasvi Jaiswal not being picked for the five-game rubber.
The report added that the candidates were also asked to share their opinions on teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi failing to make the cut in India's playing XI and how would they handle the situation around his selection debate.
Since making his debut for India earlier this year, Sooryavanshi has featured in three of the 14 T20Is head coach Gautam Gambhir has overseen.
Another key topic was raised during the interviews, where the candidates were asked to identify Shubman Gill's replacement if the India captain becomes unavailable due to a long-term injury.
The leadership hierarchy in the Indian team has been far from settled in recent times, with several players being demoted despite being named vice-captain after one or two series.
The report, however, mentioned that while the selection process was thorough, the BCCI has all but made up their mind regarding their preferred choice.
Currently, Pragyan Ojha is the interim head of the selection committee.
Ramesh Powar and Salil Ankola are reportedly leading the race to get the job, despite Wasim Jaffer's late entry into the mix.
