Wheel Of Time: The One Power Officially Ushers In A New Era

James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series is absolutely one of the most complete fantasy creations of all time, and there's still so much potential for it to be explored further. The Prime Video adaptation was cancelled after three seasons, leaving a bit of a dearth of other options for those who were hoping to get embroiled in the universe beyond the books.
It's easy to see a world where The Wheel of Time competes with the likes of Game of Thrones and others, but it really needs the backing of those willing to take a chance on it. In lieu of companies taking that leap right now, for the most part, fans have banded together to fund a very exciting new release tied to the IP, and it could also serve as one of the best genre releases of 2027.
In case you missed the original campaign run, Dire Wolf games put forward a Kickstarter to fund their project War of the Dragon, The Wheel of Time's first official board game adaptation. Billed as a grand strategy game, it draws heavily on area control strategies in a format that's best experienced with just two players.
The One Power was the War of the Dragon Kickstarter's centerpiece pledge at $123, and although that's pricey on the face of it, you do get a lot of bang for your buck. It includes the standard version of the game, 40 PVC miniatures: 30 character figures, eight army figures, and two player pawns, as well as 14 colored miniature bases. That's a marked improvement over the standard cardboard characters that are included at lower tiers.
Jordan's world is notably very complex, so the developer haven't really tried to make it a 1:1 translation of a work that was completed on an epic scale. Instead, you'll be charged with forging your own stories within its framework, which could easily make this one of the most exciting ways to experience the universe to date.
If that's a little too rich for your blood, the $90 Dragon Reborn tier contains the complete game with its boards, cards, tokens, magnetic wheel spinners, and 38 color standees. You will also be able to pick up a copy of the base game in person from participating retailers, and though the funding period has technically finished, you can still back it late via Kickstarter's unique system.
The only caveat to you having a Wheel of Good Times is that War of the Dragon isn't set to start shipping out to backers just yet. The manufacturer is currently predicting June 2027 as the time when you'll be able to receive and play the game, though it's worth noting that this is subject to change to avoid disappointment.
