The Best Isekai Anime Episode Of Year Is Now On Crunchyroll, And It's 10/10 Perfect

2026 has already cemented itself as the biggest year for the isekai in anime history. While the genre's finest hits like Mushoku Tensei and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime have been delivering some seriously good storylines over the last few months, Crunchyroll has just dropped an episode that might have stolen the entire year. The crown belongs to the latest Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World finale, and after everything this season has been building toward, it lived up to its hype.

Instead of giving the Pleiades Watchtower arc a safe, quick wrap-up, Studio White Fox went completely the other way with season 4, episode #19. The finale runs for around 45 minutes and packs a ridiculous amount into that extra time, from the chaos at the tower to Subaru's heartbreaking goodbye with Shaula.

Then comes one of the biggest developments in the franchise in years, with Rem finally reaching a turning point after everything that happened to her. For a series that has never been afraid to put Subaru through hell, this finale somehow manages to make the suffering feel worth it. It is easily the biggest isekai anime episode of 2026 so far.

A 45-Minute Finale Cements Re:Zero As The Greatest Isekai Anime Experience Of The Year

Shula Kissing Subaru On The Cheeks In Re Zero Season 4 Episode 19

The Pleiades Watchtower arc could have ended with a simple victory lap, but Re:Zero had absolutely no interest in making things easy for Subaru. “Shaula / Hero” throws him, Julius, Meili, and Beatrice into one last fight against Shaula, and the whole thing feels like the kind of battle Re:Zero has been saving up for. Shaula may look like a giant crimson scorpion at this point, but there is still a person buried underneath all that violence. That makes the fight hurt a lot more than a normal monster battle.

Shaula's final moments are especially rough. After waiting around the tower for roughly 400 years, she finally gets a few days with Subaru before her story reaches its end. Seeing her return to human form for that brief moment, kiss Subaru, and then fade away is exactly the kind of emotional gut punch this series loves to pull.

Emilia Fighting Volcanic In Re Zero Season 4, Episode 19

And then White Fox basically refuses to let anyone breathe. Emilia's name is restored, the tower's trials appear to be finished, and suddenly the Witch of Envy's shadows arrive. Her arrival triggers Volcanica, leading to a strong attack that sends Subaru, Rem, and Rui Arneb flying into the Vollachian wilderness, completely changing the situation again.

It is right there in the foreign grass that Re:Zero finally drops the moment every fan has been waiting years to see: Rem waking up from her sleep. But the long-awaited awakening comes with a brutal twist. After having her memories erased by Gluttony, Rem looks directly at Subaru and asks, “Who are you?” But watching Subaru take that crushing psychological blow on the chin and immediately declare that he will become her hero is the perfect final hit for an episode that has spent nearly an hour putting him through hell.

The Pleiades Watchtower Arc Proves Re:Zero Operates In A Completely Different League

Not just episode #19, but the entirety of Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World season 4 has been an absolute masterclass in psychological fantasy. The Pleiades Watchtower arc gave one massive payoff after another, from Julius Juukulius reclaiming his knightly honor in his fight with Reid Astrea to Subaru's agonizing struggle to piece his broken mind back together after losing his memories. Season 4 kept throwing impossible situations at the cast and somehow found a way to make each one hit harder than the last. It proved exactly why Re:Zero operates in a completely different league from most isekai, redefining the genre.

Now comes the painful part: waiting to see how Studio White Fox handles the highly anticipated season 5. The main cast is scattered, Subaru is stranded in the unforgiving Vollachia Empire, Rem has no memory of him, and Rui Arneb is barely the helpless ally Subaru probably wanted. The next chapter is positioned to be a completely different kind of story, with survival becoming just as important as solving the mess surrounding Subaru. If season 4 proved anything, it is that Re:Zero is only getting better at making things absolutely miserable for its favorite characters.
