Of all the Disney+ TV shows that have fleshed out the Marvel Cinematic Universe since WandaVision arrived in 2021, few have gained as quietly dedicated a fandom as Moon Knight. The 2022 series introduced audiences to Marc Spector (Oscar Isaac), a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder who serves as the earthly avatar of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham). Combining supernatural horror and psychological drama, Moon Knight offered something completely different from Marvel's usual small-screen superhero formula.

However, Moon Knight occupies a strange position within the wider MCU. Despite being among the most popular live-action Disney+ Marvel projects, the series feels strangely disconnected from the rest of the franchise. Fortunately, this looks set to change in 2028, when an upcoming animated Disney+ special will finally bring the mysterious vigilante back into the spotlight.

Marvel has announced three upcoming Marvel Zombies Halloween specials, including one titled Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu. While it isn't quite the live-action comeback that many fans have been hoping for, the title all but confirms that Moon Knight will finally return to screens. Several questions remain unanswered though, including which version of the character will appear and what the special means for the possibility of Moon Knight season 2 ever happening.

The Fist Of Khonshu Is The Focus Of A New Marvel Zombies Special In 2028

Marvel has officially confirmed that Marvel Zombies will continue with three new animated Halloween specials, all heading to Disney+ over the next three years. During New York Comic Con 2026 Marvel revealed that Marvel Zombies: Dawn of the Deadlands will arrive in 2027, followed by Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu in 2028, and Marvel Zombies: The End of the World rounding off the trilogy in 2029.

The announcement is especially exciting for Moon Knight fans, as The Fist of Khonshu marks the first time the character has been the central focus of a Disney+ project since his 2022 live-action series. However, Marvel has revealed very little about the upcoming special beyond its title and release year. There is currently no confirmed cast, plot synopsis, or indication of exactly when the story takes place within the Marvel Zombies timeline.

The Fist of Khonshu is also the title of a Moon Knight comic book series. However, since the comic doesn't take place within the Marvel Zombies continuity, there's little reason to believe it will have any bearing on the 2028 Moon Knight Disney+ special. The title is more likely a reference to Moon Knight's established identity as Khonshu's supernatural champion than it is a tease that a comic storyline is being adapted into animation.

Regardless of what the story involves, the fact that Moon Knight is finally headlining another Disney+ project is a significant development. Marvel's supernatural characters have frequently struggled to find their place within the MCU's overarching narrative, and Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu could help establish Moon Knight as a more prominent fixture of the franchise, even if his next adventure takes place in a different corner of the Multiverse.

Versions Of Moon Knight Have Appeared In Other MCU Animated Shows Since Disney+'s Live-Action Show

Although Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu seemingly guarantees another appearance from Moon Knight, it doesn't necessarily mean the Marc Spector Oscar Isaac played in live-action will be returning. However, there are two established animated versions of Moon Knight that Marvel could potentially revisit, making the identity of the upcoming special's protagonist particularly intriguing.

The first animated Moon Knight appeared in What If...? season 3, with Oscar Isaac reprising his role as an alternate-universe Marc Spector in the episode "What If... the Hulk Fought the Mech Avengers?" While this version of Moon Knight was a Mech pilot and so unlikely to jump across the Multiverse to appear in Marvel Zombies, it did establish that Isaac was willing to return to the role in animated form. This makes the Moon Knight star’s involvement in The Fist of Khonshu a distinct possibility. However, the second animated incarnation of Moon Knight presents an equally interesting alternative.

In the 2025 Marvel Zombies Disney+ series, the mantle of Moon Knight belongs to Blade (Todd Williams), who has become Khonshu's champion following Marc Spector's death during the zombie apocalypse. Known as Blade Knight, this incarnation combines Blade's vampiric abilities and swordsmanship with the supernatural powers Moon Knight receives from Khonshu.

Sadly, Blade Knight also dies during the events of Marvel Zombies, complicating the possibility of his return in Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu. This makes the plot for the Moon Knight Disney+ special a fascinating mystery. It could focus on a third Moon Knight who receives Khonshu’s blessing following the death of Blade Knight. Alternatively, The Fist of Khonshu could serve as a prequel, exploring Marc Spector's death in the Marvel Zombies timeline and how Blade eventually inherited his powers.

Will Moon Knight Season 2 Ever Happen?

Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu may be a welcome addition to the MCU for Moon Knight fans, but it isn’t the live-action return they’ve spent years hoping for. Unfortunately, Marvel still has no announced plans for Moon Knight season 2. The Disney+ show was originally developed as a limited series, and despite its popularity, Marvel hasn’t indicated Marc Spector's story will continue with a second chapter of the live-action show.

However, that doesn't necessarily mean the character's future is completely closed off. In February 2025 (via comicbook.com), Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum addressed the possibility of Moon Knight season 2, explaining why the studio's changing television strategy had complicated its prospects:

“Marvel Television has happened in waves, and I think Moon Knight happened in a wave of shows that were going to establish characters that would tie-in to the future, and moving forward our priorities have shifted. We’re making shows as shows that can exist as annual releases, more like television. I would love to see a Moon Knight Season 2, but there are plans for Moon Knight down the road.“

Winderbaum's comments that Marvel still intends to use Moon Knight is definitely hopeful, and whether this was in reference to the newly announced Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonsu is unclear (as is the possibility of it meaning a Moon Knight appearance in Avengers: Doomsday or Secret Wars is on the cards). It’s also worth noting that February 2025 feels increasingly distant, and the MCU has undergone considerable changes since then. The eventual returns of Daredevil and The Punisher demonstrate that Marvel isn't necessarily opposed to revisiting character-focused TV shows long after the original runs ended.

If Marvel Zombies: The Fist of Khonshu is a success, it could have significant implications for Moon Knight's future. It will be the first project headlined by the character since 2022, giving Marvel an opportunity to gauge whether audiences remain invested in the supernatural vigilante. If the animated 2028 special lands, it could encourage Marvel and Disney to reconsider Moon Knight being a limited-series status and finally give Oscar Isaac's live-action incarnation the continuation he deserves.
