Bank Negara pushes to expand syariah-compliant financing solutions

Translate

KUALA LUMPUR: Bank Negara Malaysia is seeking to broaden the range of Syariah-compliant financial solutions to better support businesses, investment activities and evolving customer needs under its latest strategy to advance the country's Islamic finance industry.

The central bank's 23-page Strategy Paper on "Advancing Syariah Contract Applications for a More Productive and Inclusive Economy" sets out its direction for the next phase of Islamic finance development, focusing on the purposeful and diverse application of Syariah contracts to address evolving financing, investment and protection needs.

Bank Negara said Malaysia's Islamic finance industry had grown into one of the world's most developed ecosystems, but there was scope to broaden the range of viable Syariah-compliant solutions to create greater room for innovation and choice.

The strategy aims to strengthen Islamic finance's contribution to productive economic activities, quality job creation, sustainable value creation and growth, as well as positive societal outcomes.

It outlines a progressive approach to modernising the Syariah contract framework to provide greater coherence, proportionality and flexibility while preserving Shariah integrity.

This would support innovation and facilitate the development of solutions that better reflect evolving customer and market needs.

Bank Negara said financial institutions would be encouraged to make wider use of diverse Syariah contracts to address different financing needs, including entrepreneurship, business expansion, project financing and the growth of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

This would provide financial institutions with greater scope to develop solutions tailored to different economic activities and customer needs.

The central bank said the strategy also sought to encourage a broader mix of Syariah-compliant solutions within the financial system, while recognising that existing products which had successfully served customers and market needs would continue to remain important.

Any evolution in the range of solutions offered would be gradual and market-driven, guided by customer needs, commercial viability and financial stability considerations.

Bank Negara said the strategy was aimed at expanding what Islamic finance could achieve through more diverse and fit-for-purpose Shariah-compliant solutions to support entrepreneurship, productive investment and shared prosperity.

It also seeks to build a more resilient and value-driven Islamic financial system that delivers stronger economic and social impact.
