90-Year-Old Homa Bay Widow Receives New Home Through Empowerment Program

At over 90 years old, Elena Adera Opundo of Kanyadota Ward in Homa Bay County has endured decades of hardship, including the tragic loss of five of her seven children. Left to raise her 13 grandchildren without a stable dwelling, the nonagenarian spent years living in precarious conditions.

Her fortunes changed through the Widows Empowerment Program, under the patronage of Internal Security Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo.

After community assessments identified her urgent need for shelter, the initiative commissioned the full construction of a permanent, modern house to restore her living conditions.

The completed project, from foundation to roofing,was officially handed over during a community ceremony attended by family members, neighbors, and local leaders.

For Opundo, the project provides more than physical shelter; it offers security, peace of mind, and a dignified environment to care for her grandchildren. Local coordinators highlighted the handover as a testament to targeted social welfare interventions aimed at supporting vulnerable elderly citizens in rural communities.
