Deep in the bowels of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time lurks one of gaming's most terrifying enemies. It's called Dead Hand, and you first encounter it below Kakariko Village in a dungeon full of torture devices and corpses. It is, for my money, the most abrupt turns towards full-on horror I've ever seen in what is ostensibly a family game.

With The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time getting a remake for Nintendo Switch 2 in just a few days, fans have been wondering how Nintendo would square the gruesome Dead Hand with the more realistic look of the new version. In the original game, Dead Hand is clearly supposed to be a blood-splattered horror, but the low-poly nature of the N64 lets your imagination do most of the work. Now, we know what Dead Hand looks like in the remake.

If you didn't know, there have been a ton of leaks over the last week or so around the Ocarina of Time remake, because I guess this is just what happens with major releases now. We've already seen the redesigned Redeads (the Zelda universe version of zombies) and now we can see what Dead Hand looks like. Obviously, if you don't want to be spoiled, I'd suggest you stop reading. I'd also ask why you clicked on this article in the first place.

As shared over on X, the new and improved(?) Dead Hand is pretty horrible. The sunken eyes and unhinged jaw remain. It also looks like the skin from its face has been peeled off, presumably to make it more obvious to players where to thrust their sword in a blind panic. The rest of it is pretty much as I remember it: large, blob-like, and decaying. Oh yes, a new generation of kids is about to be traumatized forever.

While it's a shame to see so much of the Ocarina of Time remake leaking so close to release, it's pretty much par for the course these days. It's also getting me even more excited than I already was, showing off a few elements I had questions about that Nintendo had chose not to reveal.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake officially launches November 5, and is the big star of Nintendo's 40th anniversary plans for the franchise. Once the N64 remake has released, focus will undoubtedly turn to the live-action movie in 2027, and then the next original entry in the series.

In a recent statement, Nintendo teased how its work on Ocarina of Time may influence the next Zelda game: "By learning the game structure and development style behind the original The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and by actually rebuilding it as a full remake, it may trigger new insights that they can carry forward into future development. If we could achieve that, I thought it would be incredibly valuable. That’s what led us to the conclusion that now is the right time to revisit The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time once again."
