US encourages Indonesia to serve as STM role model for ASEAN
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Thao Anh Tran, Chargé d'Affaires ad interim of the US Mission to ASEAN, said Indonesia could serve as a regional model for developing strategic trade management, citing its economic size and global trade role.
Speaking at the 5th Annual Southeast Asia Forum on Export Controls in Jakarta on Wednesday, Tran said Indonesia's position as Southeast Asia's largest economy gave it an opportunity to shape regional practices.
She said Indonesia could demonstrate strategic trade management through rigorous security, transparency and international cooperation.
Strategic Trade Management is a trade-governance framework designed to prevent strategic goods and dual-use technologies from being diverted to activities that threaten national or international security.
Its development is consistent with Indonesia's commitments under the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United States, signed by Presidents Prabowo Subianto and Donald Trump in February 2026.
Tran said increasingly complex global supply chains were creating new vulnerabilities and risks involving the misuse of dual-use technologies for commercial and military purposes.
She said such challenges required coordinated regional action rather than separate national approaches.
The United States welcomed the Philippines' initiative, as ASEAN chair, to make an ASEAN Leaders' Declaration on Strategic Trade Management a priority economic deliverable for the November ASEAN Summit.
Tran said a region-wide approach could strengthen security while building trust among trading partners and creating a more predictable environment for economic growth and innovation.
The 5th Annual Southeast Asia Forum on Export Controls was held in Jakarta as part of the Indonesia Strategic Trade Management Summit 2026.
The forum brought together officials and experts to discuss export controls, strategic goods and technologies, and cooperation on supply-chain security across Southeast Asia.
