Sermon: Build your spiritual life on rock
Jesus talked about two foundations (Mt 7:24). One is rock; one is sand. You build on rock if you struggle to live a Christian life. You ask God to give you faith. You read the Bible. You go to church. You are sorry for your sins. You sacrifice yourself for others, especially at home. Above all, you spend time in prayer every day.
After telling us to build our house on rock, he tells us what happens next: “Rain came down, floods rose, gales blew and hurled themselves against that house, and it did not fall: it was founded on rock.” Things will go wrong. A flood of troubles will threaten to wreck your life. If you have tried to stay close to God, you will not despair when it happens.
When troubles come, you will complain. You will ask God why he has abandoned you. Even Jesus himself asked that question, didn’t he? Complain as much as you want. Ask God why all this is happening. But turn to him. I am not saying that he will send an angel to explain everything. Probably not. Just stick to your routine: prayer, Bible, going to church, being sorry for your sins.
God uses the things that go wrong to purify us. As we read in the Book of Judith (8:25): “The Lord our God tested our ancestors and now he is testing us. Remember how he treated Abraham, all the ordeals of Isaac. For as these ordeals were intended by God to search their hearts, so now this is not vengeance that God is exacting on us, but a warning inflicted by the Lord on those who are near his heart.”
