Pope Leo announces tumor on lung, surgery planned in 'next few days'

Translate

Pope Leo XIV announced Sunday that he will undergo surgery to remove a small nodule from his lung, revealing the unexpected health concern to thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square following his traditional Angelus prayer.

The 71-year-old pontiff said doctors discovered the "localized" nodule at a "very early stage" and recommended its removal.

The surgery is scheduled for early next week, with the pope expected to remain hospitalized for approximately one week, according to Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni.
