Spoiler Alert: This list contains spoilers for The Diplomat Season 4.Netflix struck gold with its political thriller The Diplomat. Created by Debora Cahn, the series follows Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), a seasoned career diplomat for the United States who is abruptly appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom. As the political landscape shifts dramatically, Kate must navigate a chaotic profession and a complicated marriage to Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), a charismatic, manipulative former ambassador known for going rogue and pullingstrings behind the scenes.

Now, after four seasons, The Diplomat has proven a series can get better with age. With sharp, intelligent writing, high-stakes narrative crisis management, and engaging characters with electric chemistry, The Diplomat flourishes. The series' brilliance lies in balancing high-octane political thrills with sharp character development and relationships. And when the story welcomes new powerhouse additions, the DNA remains the same. So, with four seasons in the books, which season is the very best? It's time to find out!

4 Season 1

This is where it all started! It might seem like a surprise that the first is the worst, but the truth is the bar was set high, and Cahn and her team kept raising it. Season 1 set the tone for what was to come, establishing the universe with political thrills and a tinge of humor. The season's hook surrounded an Iranian-backed suspected terrorist attack that blows up a British aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, killing dozens of sailors. President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) sends the newly appointed Ambassador to the U.K., Kate Wyler, to London not just to handle the emergency but as a stealth audition to replace the vice president. Traveling with her husband, Hal Wyler, Kate maneuvers around his wheeling and dealing as she forges new alliances with British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison (David Gyasi) and CIA London Station Chief Eidra Park (Ali Ahn) to trace who orchestrated the attack. As it turns out, the attack did not come from Iran at all but at the order of Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear). It ends with an explosive cliffhanger, with the fates of Hal, Deputy Chief of Mission Stuart Hayford (Ato Essandoh), and aide Ronnie Buckhurst (Jess Chanliau) hanging in the balance.

With high-octane political thrills, engaging character dynamics, and a plot that felt foreign yet so tangible, The Diplomat kicked off as perfectly as it could as a new series. For those seeking a straight-up political drama, it's present; but The Diplomat pushed things further by striking the right balance of political chatter with fast-paced dialogue centered around messy personal drama. Russell's practical, sharp-witted ambassador is grounded and intense, but with Sewell's Hal around, Russell finds Kate's humanity. She's a relatable woman who just so happens to have a career many only hear about. Without their electric dynamic trying to save their world while saving their failing relationship, The Diplomat may have fallen into a generic trap. The narrative moves at a brisk pace, letting the international crisis play out realistically, with twists and turns arriving only when earned. The Diplomat Season 1 was simply juicy. It simply falls to the bottom because the blueprint was not only executed; it exceeded expectations moving forward as major risks were allowed to be taken.

3 Season 3

Allison Janney as Grace Penn and Rory Kinnear as Nicol Trowbridge in Season 3 of 'The Diplomat.' Image via Netflix

A new president entered the chat. Season 3 proved that power makes people do the wildest things. And it all started with who became the vice president. Much of the first two seasons surrounded the discussions of Kate Wyler eventually becoming Vice President, yet when Grace Penn was sworn in, the season's first big shock was that Hal, not Kate, is picked to be her VP. Still knee-deep in the HMS Courageous debacle, Hal and Kate coordinate a plan to place the blame on the late President Rayburn, which UK Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge publicly executes. A new crisis emerges when a distressed Russian submarine carrying a doomsday nuclear weapon known as the Poseidon is discovered just off the coast of England. Kate leads tense negotiations to bury the weapon in concrete so neither Russia nor Britain can claim it, but with Penn in power, she and Hal orchestrate the theft of the weapon for American intelligence.

The third season of The Diplomat cranked up the geopolitical drama to nearly hyperdrive, as hyperdrive went full throttle in Season 4. Beginning the season with the shock appointment proved that the Penn administration would be anything but traditional. The season did a tremendous job of depicting what happens when the wrong people grab power. The Grace-Hal dynamic is tremendously fascinating to watch unfold. Hal’s new position—one tragedy away from the presidency—brilliantly adds tension for the Wylers, allowing a fresh narrative to unfold. The season was built around secrets and lies that pushed fracturing on all fronts. Trying to shake up the steamy romance drama, Aidan Turner's British spy Callum Ellis became a new intriguing cog that allowed audiences to champion Kate from moving on from Hal. Sadly, that man has such a stronghold on her. With Janney coming in a recurring capacity, it opened up the door to bringing in the First Gentleman. For The West Wing fans, a dream came true with Bradley Whitford's casting as Todd Penn. We cherished their moments together not only for their pop culture relevance but also for how they depicted a different relationship built around politics.

Collider Exclusive · 8 Questions · 2 Minutes Which Netflix Character Would Be Your Best Friend? Dustin · Emily · Wednesday · Gi-hun

Some friends drag you out of the house. Some sit with you on the worst night of your life. Netflix has written both, plus the one who tells you the truth you have been avoiding all week. Answer eight quick questions about how you actually do friendship, and find out which of them was always going to end up in your corner.

🧢Dustin(Stranger Things)

🗼Emily(Emily in Paris)

🕷️Wednesday(Wednesday)

🟢Gi-hun(Squid Game)

01

How do you usually end up making a new friend? The origin story says a lot about the friendship that follows it.

02

What is a perfect Saturday with your best friend? Friendship is mostly built out of very ordinary hours.

03

You call them at two in the morning. What happens? This is the real test of a friendship, and everybody knows it.

04

What do you want from them when you are clearly wrong? The best friendships are the ones that survive being corrected.

05

What do your friends actually value about you? The friend you attract says something about the friend you are.

06

You have a falling out. How does it go? How a friendship repairs itself matters more than how it breaks.

07

What do you actually need a best friend for? Everybody is missing something. The right friend fills that gap.

08

Ten years from now, what keeps the two of you close? Eight questions in, this is the one that decides who you get.

The Group Chat Has Spoken Your Best Friend Is…

Four Netflix characters, four completely different ways of showing up for somebody. This is the one who fits how you actually do friendship, and what having them in your life would be like.

Dustin Henderson

You do not do friendship at half volume, and neither does he. What you want is somebody who says yes to the plan before you have finished describing the plan.

  • Dustin is the friend the entire show runs on: loyal past the point of sense, enthusiastic about everything, and incapable of leaving anybody behind.
  • You have the same instinct. Your friendships are loud, specific and slightly ridiculous, and they last for decades because of it.
  • He is also the one person who would take your strangest interest completely seriously, which is far rarer than it sounds.
  • You would have a group chat. It would never once be quiet.

Emily Cooper

You are the friend who makes things happen, and so is she. Together you would be mildly exhausting to everyone around you and completely delighted with yourselves.

  • Emily treats an ordinary Tuesday as something that could be turned into an occasion, which is either the best or the worst quality in a friend depending on your energy levels.
  • You share her refusal to sit still. Neither of you has ever accepted a night in when something was happening somewhere else.
  • She is far more loyal than people give her credit for. She defends her friends loudly, publicly, and occasionally before checking the facts.
  • She would post the photo without asking. You would forgive her, because it is a very good photo.

Wednesday Addams

You have no patience for pleasant lies, and she has no ability to tell them. What looks like coldness from the outside is the most reliable friendship on this list.

  • Wednesday never says a kind thing she does not mean, which makes the rare ones count for an enormous amount.
  • You would rather be told the truth than be made comfortable. She is constitutionally incapable of offering you anything else.
  • Underneath all of it she is ferociously protective. She simply refuses to make a performance out of caring.
  • Do not expect a birthday message. Do expect her to ruin anyone who wrongs you.

Seong Gi-hun

You look after whoever is having the worst day. So does he. It is the least strategic way to move through the world and the best possible quality in a friend.

  • Gi-hun is not the strongest player in Squid Game, or the cleverest. He is the one who keeps choosing to protect somebody else, over and over, at genuine cost to himself.
  • You have the same instinct. You notice who is struggling and you stay with them, long after anybody would blame you for leaving.
  • He is a flawed friend, and that is part of why it lands. He lets people down, then comes back and tries again, which is more than most manage.
  • He would give you his last chance and never once mention that he had done it.

2 Season 2

Keri Russell as Kate Wyler and Rufus Sewell as Hal Wyler in Season 2 of 'The Diplomat.' Image via Netflix

Picking up immediately after Season 1's car explosion cliffhanger, The Diplomat's second season proved that their freshman season was no fluke. After the car bombing injured Hal and Stuart and killed Ronnie and MP Merrick Grove (Simon Chandler), Kate’s eyes are on the Prime Minister, having orchestrated the HMS Courageous attack. But as Kate and Dennison dig deeper, they learn that British adviser Meg Roylin (Celia Imrie) didn’t act alone, but under orders from U.S. Vice President Grace Penn. Her false-flag attack was meant to dismay Scotland from gaining independence, which would have forced the closure of a critical U.S. nuclear submarine base in Scotland and left the Atlantic vulnerable to Russian submarines. As rule-breaking Hal alerts the president about his vice president's actions, Rayburn dies of a heart attack, elevating Grace to the position of Leader of the Free World and Kate is trapped in a dangerous web of power, betrayal, and shifting loyalties.

Rather than resolving the cliffhanger and moving on to a new crisis, The Diplomat smartly reminds viewers that global crises are not solved overnight. The second season deepens the international relations while fleshing out many characters. By shifting into full conspiracy, it added a rich mystery to maneuver. Kate went from bureaucratic surface-level diplomat to political detective, giving her more allure and fervor. Sewell and Russell continued to build on their masterful chemistry, with their push-and-pull becoming perfectly cringe. The aftermath of the car bombing gave Hal much-needed empathy, even though you pulled your hair out as he continued to drive his bride insane. That said, without it, Kate wouldn't have had the push to become an international hero. The death of the president was almost a Chekhov's gun, but it still held immense weight. And if anyone was going to take over the role, it needed to be a legend. The addition of Janney as a guest star gave robust importance, as the formerly faceless position was now being portrayed by a powerhouse of performance. Janney's casting may have been the series' most important, as the show's energy and stakes elevated exponentially. Though this all set up a strong future, it served as the perfect bridge to the next era.

1 Season 4

Like a fine wine, The Diplomat gets better with time. Every international crisis across the first three seasons reached its boiling point as Season 4 pushed the narrative to a terrifyingly profound finale. Beginning with the fallout revolving around the Russian nuclear weapon, President Penn begins her ascent into a tyrannical, ruthless figure following a shocking assassination attempt while in the UK. As Kate is forced to confront unchecked authority, she goes rogue herself, blackmailing the Prime Minister into resignation. With Bethan Vaughn (Jodie Whittaker) taking over, Kate is forced into a new, untrusted relationship where her only options become bigger than democracy. When Prime Minister Vaughn learns the truth about the missing submarine, she plans to tell Russia, but Grace issues an aggressive ultimatum that the U.K. must stop Russia or face U.S. warships entering British waters. When Kate tries to negotiate a peaceful alternative behind the President's back, Grace replaces her influence with First Gentleman Todd Penn, the new special envoy. It all comes to a head at the G7 when the President threatens to fire on any country that interferes with the U.S. mission, causing a mass walkout, led by Kate, including White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah (Nana Mensah), Secretary of State Miguel Ganon (Miguel Sandoval), and her husband, Vice President Hal Wyler.

With not a single moment of filler, Season 4 is fast-paced, tightly plotted perfection. Ending with a constitutional crisis in today's political climate heightened the stakes and made the ending even more harrowing. The season watched Kate go where she had never gone before, pushing her into a more morally grey area. Is it her true nature or was she forced into that place of blackmail by her surroundings? Adding this new complexity enriches her character, especially when her conscience wins in the end. Of course, how the walkout and the threat of World War III affect future seasons is an exciting prospect. Dennison's off-camera death remains one of the season's most tragic shocks, one that truly impacts events beyond global strains. Watching Janney's Penn go near nuclear is frightening as the veteran actress' vigor is on full display. She becomes a formidable foe who teeters on the edge of mania, yet Janney's innate control brings Grace back down to earth. For "Kal" truthers, Season 4 saw the strongest union between Kate and Hal. They continue their uniquely turbulent, magnetic marriage and political partnership, forced to navigate moral boundaries, betrayals, and a high-voltage public walkout at the G7 summit. The Diplomat Season 4 deserves its perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.
