Clearlake Capital confirms the full acquisition of Chelsea Football Club

Clearlake Capital Group has confirmed that it will take full control of Chelsea Football Club after agreeing to acquire the ownership interests held by Todd Boehly and Mark Walter.

The development marks a major change to the ownership structure that has been in place since the consortium completed its takeover of Chelsea from Roman Abramovich in 2022. As part of the transition, Todd Boehly will leave his position as Chelsea chairman, while Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss will remain an important stakeholder and partner within the ownership group.

Chelsea confirmed that Clearlake will also acquire Walter's ownership interest, giving the investment firm full control of the club.

Boehly's Chelsea chapter comes to an end

Boehly and Clearlake joined forces in 2022 to lead the £4.25 billion acquisition of Chelsea. Under the ownership group, the club made significant investments across its men's, women's and academy teams, as well as its Cobham training facilities, medical infrastructure and player-development programmes. Boehly described his time as chairman as an honour and thanked Chelsea's supporters, players, coaches and staff. He also expressed confidence in the club's future under Clearlake's leadership.

For Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano, the next phase will involve continuing the strategy established during the previous ownership period. The pair said Clearlake intends to continue investing in Chelsea's infrastructure, sporting performance and player development, with the long-term objective of strengthening the club on and off the pitch.

However despite the change in ownership control, Chelsea has confirmed that there will be no changes to the club's day-to-day operations, leadership or strategic direction as a result of the transaction.

How much did Clearlake buy Chelsea from Todd Boehly?

The reported value of the transaction is around £950 million ($1.27 billion), according to Reuters. The deal effectively ends the joint-control arrangement that brought Boehly and Clearlake together four years ago.

Clearlake's move represents a new chapter in Chelsea's post-Abramovich era, with the investment firm now set to operate with full control of one of English football's most prominent clubs.
