A24's You Can See Everything narrowly captured the North American box office crown over Warner Bros.' (WBD) Clayface during the Halloween weekend, as overall ticket sales plunged from the previous week despite remaining slightly ahead of last year's comparable period.
The documentary about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, generated an estimated $10.6 million in its third weekend, according to figures from Rentrak. That was enough to edge Clayface, which collected $10.4 million in its second weekend, by just $200,684.The close contest could change when final box office receipts are reported Monday.
The domestic movie marketplace generated an estimated $55.7 million from October 30 through November 1, down 42.1% from the previous weekend but up 4.2% from the corresponding weekend in 2025.
For investors in theater chains and entertainment companies, the results highlight the uneven nature of the box office recovery. Domestic ticket sales have reached $8.46 billion year to date, up 20.1% from $7.05 billion during the comparable period last year. However, the sharp weekly decline underscores the industry's continued dependence on a steady supply of compelling releases to sustain attendance.
A24's You Can See Everything has accumulated $63.9 million domestically, while Warner Bros.' Clayface has grossed $44.1 million. The latter fell 57% from its opening weekend, compared with a 43% decline for the A24 release.
Fathom Entertainment's (AMC)(CNK) animated fantasy Wildwood ranked third with $7.5 million, down 39%, bringing its domestic total to $25.9 million. Audience polling offered an encouraging signal for its staying power, with 98% of surveyed moviegoers saying they would definitely or probably recommend the film.
Black Bear's Wicker, starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård, demonstrated stronger staying power. The film slipped just 28% to $4.1 million in its second weekend, bringing its domestic total to $13.3 million. It also opened atop the U.K. box office with $2.2 million, excluding previews.
Among established franchises, Sony's (SONY) Resident Evil continued to perform well internationally, reaching $400 million worldwide in its seventh weekend. The horror release added $2.5 million domestically and $7.5 million overseas, with international weekend receipts declining just 29%.
Universal's (CMCSA) Other Mommy also passed a milestone, reaching $107.5 million worldwide after adding $2.5 million domestically and $6 million internationally.
Horror remains a particularly important contributor to the theatrical business in 2026. The genre has generated an estimated $1.38 billion domestically through November 1, putting it about $44.3 million short of its full-year 2025 record.
Meanwhile, the premium-format market continued to generate revenue from a mix of Hollywood releases, documentaries and international productions. IMAX (IMAX) reported approximately $6 million in worldwide box office receipts over the weekend, including $825,000 from the debut of Everest: The Other Side.
The industry faces another test next weekend, when Warner Bros. (SKYD) releases The Cat in the Hat in approximately 4,000 theaters and Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in about 2,700 locations. Those releases could provide a needed boost to theater attendance following the Halloween slowdown.
