Donnie Darko Returns To Theaters To Celebrate Cult Classic's 25th Anniversary

Just in time for spooky season, Donnie Darko is returning to the big screen. The cult classic film starring Jake Gyllenhaal is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Fittingly, it will return to theaters starting on October 2, which has come to be known as Donnie Darko Day due to the date’s significance in kicking off the events of the film.
Gyllenhaal stars as the titular character, who is misunderstood by his parents, teachers, and classmates. He is also haunted by visions of Frank, a mysterious giant bunny only he can see. After escaping near death with help from Frank, Donnie is drawn into increasingly strange situations that portend the end of the world. Combining the elements of a coming-of-age drama, a sci-fi film, and a psychological thriller, Donnie Darko has captivated audiences for decades.
The Enduring Legacy of Donnie Darko
Donny Darko returns to theaters from October 2–4, 2026. The theatrical re-release, in new 4K restoration, includes an exclusive introduction from director and writer Richard Kelly exploring the film’s legacy. It’s perfect timing too, with Kelly working on a sequel film based on his upcoming novel, The Philosophy of Time Travel, which will directly follow the events of the original.
Donnie Darko was a defining performance in the career of Gyllenhaal, who was 20 when cast in the role. Despite featuring an ensemble cast including other heavy hitters including Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Holmes Osborne, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Noah Wyle, Patrick Swayze, and Seth Rogen, the film struggled at the box office. However, as time has passed, the movie has only grown in popularity, with its complex story allowing fans to continue to search for meaning in the ambiguous ending.
Fathom Entertainment is re-releasing Donnie Darko with American Cinematheque at the Aero Theatre and presented by Saga Arts. Vice President of Marketing at Fathom Entertainment, Shannah Miller, spoke about the place the film holds in pop culture.
