I Hope My Goal Against Madagascar Is First Of Many For Super Eagles — Ilenikhena

Super Eagles debutant George Ilenikhena says his goal against Madagascar is just the beginning after opening his international account in style.

The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad striker scored on his senior debut as Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1 in the 2027 AFCON qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday.

“I feel very happy and proud to score my first goal with this national team,” Ilenikhena said after the match.

“It is a very big step for me in my young career. I am very happy and hope for more.”

Ilenikhena, who started in place of injured Victor Osimhen, equalised in first-half stoppage time after Alex Iwobi threaded a precise pass into the box. Madagascar had taken an early lead through Ehsan Kari in the 16th minute.

The youngster revealed he was determined to score before kickoff.

“Before the match, I was thinking to do my best, to give my best on the pitch, to help the team, and to score my first goal. I hope for more goals, help the team in the best way possible and win many trophies with Nigeria,” he added.

On which footballers inspire him, he added: “I watched Okocha and now Victor Osimhen. I will continue to work hard and do my best for the team on the pitch to be always in the team.”
