David Boreanaz's 7-Part Action Show's Massive Streaming Resurgence Emotionally Addressed By Showrunner

SEAL Team is an action-packed war drama starring David Boreanaz as Jason Hayes, a Navy SEAL who trains with his elite squad to execute complex, tense operations for the U.S. military. Benjamin Cavell created the series and also briefly served as a showrunner. The longest-running showrunner was Spencer Hudnut, and the other leading cast members included Neil Brown Jr., A.J. Buckley, Toni Trucks, Justin Melnick, and Tyler Grey.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for Marshals season 2, Hudnut reacted to SEAL Team's streaming success. He is "so grateful that a new audience is finding the show," which led to new opportunities for him. He emotionally recounted the importance of portraying "veteran issues" on screen as he did with SEAL Team. He also noted that staying in touch with his cast and crew has been wonderful. Check out Hudnut's full quote below:
Oh, it's incredible. I'm so grateful that a new audience is finding the show. I owe so much to that show. I wouldn't be doing Marshals without that show. I got a real education on that show, and I think some of the stories that we told, similar to what we're trying to do with Broken Rock in this show — these shows are, first and foremost, here to enterta in . But I think some of the shared connective tissue is that, much like what we're doing on Broken Rock, with the veteran issues and issues facing our men and women in uniform, we were able to shine a spotlight on certain areas in SEAL Team. So, I think people are getting exposed to stories about traumatic brain injury, and PTS, and I'm just hoping that helps continue to raise awareness that our men and women in uniform are facing. So it's really gratifying, and again, it's also allowed a bunch of us to reconnect. It's been two years since SEAL Team finished, and so to be in touch with a bunch of the cast and the crew, and people behind the scenes has been wonderful. It's fun to flip on Netflix and see see David Boreanaz's face in uniform.
SEAL Team premiered in 2017 and ran for seven successful seasons before wrapping up in 2024. The series cancellation was announced in late 2023, when it was confirmed that SEAL Team season 7 would be its last. While Paramount+ didn't formally state the reason, lead actor Boreanaz indicated that he himself was ready to say goodbye to SEAL Team, noting how physically intense the show was.

Now, SEAL Team sits on two main platforms, Paramount+ and Netflix. After being a Paramount exclusive for a while, all seven seasons hit Netflix late this summer on August 18. This has exposed Hudnut's series to a new audience, allowing it to blossom on the streaming charts. It made Netflix's top 10 list for English-language TV shows during its first week being on the platform, and continues to be a periodic hit.
Luckily, his relationship with Paramount+ continued after SEAL Team wrapped up. As he discussed in his interview, Hudnut is now diving further into the military world with Marshals. The series is also a Yellowstone spinoff, following the mothership show's Kayce Dutton as he leaves the ranch to work for a team of U.S. Marshals. Marshals season 2 premieres this weekend, kicking off on Sunday, October 4, and airing episodes weekly on Sundays.
