Vetrimaaran breaks silence on lip-sync criticism in his films: ‘Do you want sync or story? I choose story’; 'Arasan' director opens on directing Hindi film

A filmmaker’s choices often become part of the discussion surrounding his movies, and Vetrimaaran has now addressed one criticism that continues to follow his work. Known for films such as 'Asuran,' 'Vada Chennai' and 'Viduthalai,' the director believes that storytelling should remain the main focus of filmmaking.

His comments on the difference between actors’ lip movements and the dialogues heard on screen have drawn attention, offering a glimpse into how he approaches his craft.

Vetrimaaran’s statement on lip-sync criticism

Speaking at the 16th edition of the Indian Film Project (IFP) during a discussion titled Making of a Modern Auteur, Vetrimaaran responded to questions about the lip-sync issue in his films. Explaining his position as reported by Filmibeat, he said, “Everybody asks about lipsync, I only have one answer, to my team, not to all of you.

I ask them, ‘Do you want sync or story? I choose story. If you want sync, you have sync. You can keep sync.

’” His remarks highlight his preference for keeping the story at the centre of the filmmaking process rather than allowing technical concerns to take priority.

Vetrimaaran reveals his editing process and talks about directing Hindi films

The director also spoke about his approach to filmmaking and said he does not follow a fixed method. “I don't have any process. I just try to be myself, and I try to stick to what I do,” he explained.

Vetrimaaran added that editing remains an important part of his creative work, even after a film reaches theatres. “I like to edit. I keep editing, and sometimes even after a film has been released, I keep editing,” he said. Addressing the possibility of making a Hindi film, he added, “I will feel confident in the languages I know, to make films.

So if I could have proficiency in Hindi, maybe I will try doing it.”
