Netflix’s New Fantasy Movie Rewrites A Classic Disney Story In Steps Trailer

A classic Disney story is rewritten in the first trailer for Netflix's Steps.

From Charles Perrault's 1697 fairy tale to the 1950 animated Disney movie, Cinderella is a classic and has been adapted into many new forms over the years, including Disney's own 2015 live-action remake. The latest take on the story is Steps, an animated fantasy comedy film that sees stepsisters Lilith (Ali Wong) and Margot (Stephanie Hsu) stealing the magic wand that belongs to the evil stepsister and hijacking the Royal Ball. This leads to disastrous consequences, undoing the story everyone knows and forcing Lilith to team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) to save the kingdom.

Netflix has now released a trailer for Steps, which begins with narration describing the classic tale of Cinderella being tormented by her evil stepsisters. However, Lilith quickly begins to set the record straight with "the real story" that involves familiar elements like princes, glass slippers, and royal balls, but also "revenge, high-speed chases, and a really hot troll" known as Gef, voiced by The Last of Us star Young Mazino. The footage also shows the tyrannical Priscilla (Nikki Glaser) relishing her power, along with Lilith and Cinderella being hunted by the formidable Roderick (Peter Dinklage). Also featured in the trailer is the Prince, who is voiced by Harry Potter and Tony Award-winning star Daniel Radcliffe. John Ripa, who directs the movie alongside Alyce Tzue, previously shared in the Steps casting announcement that Radcliffe "brought his incredibly unique and nuanced brand of quirky, big-hearted humor to our Prince, and created a character that's irresistible and delightful. We were blown away by Daniel's range and razor-sharp comedy chops, and it was simply a pleasure to work with him."

Instead of sidelining or erasing iconic characters like Cinderella, the Prince, and the Fairy Godmother, they are still important parts of the story through being rewritten with a new spin. This version of the Fairy Godmother is a bumbling schemer and Cinderella has to fight biker trolls, evil henchmen, and escape the Screaming Woods with the help of her stepsister, Lilith. Meanwhile, the Prince is more unconventional, "the hot troll" known as Gef is the heartthrob, and Priscilla is the villain.

Steps looks to build on the success of last year's animated fantasy Netflix hit, KPop Demon Hunters, which became the streaming platform's most-watched movie of all time and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film. Another animated fantasy hit emerged earlier in 2026 with Swapped, which became the eighth most-watched movie on Netflix's all-time chart. The streamer's existing slate of animated movies also includes Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, Nimona, The Sea Beast, Klaus, and Leo, and both In Waves and Ray Gunn are debuting in December.

Netflix's new animated fantasy comedy movie makes its streaming debut on November 20, days before Disney releases their own new movie belonging to the same genres in theaters with Hexed on November 25. Instead of a different take on a classic fairy tale and Disney movie, Hexed is centered on a teenager who learns she has magical powers and enters a world of witches.

Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing are the producers for Steps, and the screenplay was written by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, and Felicia Ho. The score is composed by Academy Award winner Kris Bowers, whose previous credits include Spider-Noir, The Punisher: One Last Kill, GOAT, The Wild Robot, The Last Repair Shop, Bob Marley: One Love, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, and Inventing Anna.

Steps releases on Netflix on November 20.
