Want to smell expensive? This new M&S perfume already has all the beauty editors talking - and it's just £22.50

There’s nothing quite like ringing in a new season with a new fragrance. Over the last few months, I’ve gravitated towards lighter, cleaner scents, like Diptyque’s Ilio (£145), which, to me, smells like a holiday in the Med in a bottle, and Molton Brown’s Tea Ceremony (£149), a newer, fresh fragrance with a slightly sweet green-tea scent and warm, woody finish.

But with autumn officially here – and the temperatures finally starting to drop – I’m ready to add some heavier, warmer scents into my rotation. Of course, I have a few favourites I return to every year, including Twilly d'Hermès (£136), with notes of ginger, tuberose and sandalwood for a floral, lightly spicy finish.

That said, I’m always on the lookout for something new, particularly if it means I can spend my pay cheque on a leather jacket rather than a bottle of eau de parfum. Enter STUDIO, the fashion-led fragrance collection from M&S, which launched in June with eight unisex eau de parfums designed to be worn solo or layered together.

I have to give it to M&S: the bottles look seriously expensive, with sleek white labels, metallic embossing and black magnetic caps. They wouldn’t look out of place next to Le Labo or Byredo on my bathroom shelf. But while I liked the collection, there wasn’t one particular scent that made me think, I need this.

Sheer Musk, with notes of pink pepper, cashmere and musk, was probably my favourite. It’s one of those clean, warm, ‘your skin but better’ scents, a little like Glossier You (£70). But as I already own the latter, none of the original STUDIO fragrances had quite convinced me to part with my money – until now.

Alongside four new eau de parfums for men, M&S has just expanded its STUDIO collection with what I think is its best scent yet: Aura Ambrette.

The fragrance is built around ambrette and sandalwood, alongside ISO E Super – an aroma molecule known for adapting to your skin, meaning it can smell subtly different on everyone. And, honestly, it smells expensive. It’s warm and clean at the same time, with a creamy, almost velvety quality and a faintly woody finish thanks to the sandalwood and musk.

Best of all? It’s just £22.50 for 100ml.

That’s a serious steal, particularly when I’ve got a couple of investment pieces on my autumn wish list. The only catch is that Aura Ambrette is a limited-edition fragrance, so there’s no telling how long it’ll be around.

My advice? If you like your perfumes clean, warm and quietly luxurious, don’t wait too long to give this one a spritz.
