Amazon Orders Tennis Drama ‘Rally’ From Julie Plec and Andre Agassi
Prime Video has ordered a new series Rally, a competitive tennis drama from The Vampire Diaries creator and We Were Liars co-showrunner Julie Plec, which will be executive produced by former tennis pro Andre Agassi.
The series, which the streamer announced Friday morning, is set at a “hyper-competitive” elite tennis academy, where “ambitious young players discover that the loneliest sport in the world demands sacrificing the very connections that might be the only thing that makes winning worth it,” according to a release.
Plec will write, direct, showrun and executive produce the series hailing from Universal Television in association with Entertainment 360 and Amazon MGM Studios. The show is being made under Plec’s production banner My So Called Company, which is under an overall deal at Universal Television. In addition to Plec, executive producers include Guymon Casady for Entertainment 360, Agassi and fellow former player Justin Gimelstob and Emily Cummins for My So Called Company.
“I am eager for Justin and I to lend our experiences to help the incredible Rally team,” Agassi said in a release. “At this stage of our lives having an endeavor that allows us to work with the best in class in what they do and hopefully contribute to the process, is an exciting challenge.”
Inspiration for the project came from Casady’s own experience watching his children train in elite junior tennis at IMG Academy. “To build this world alongside a master storyteller like Julie Plec, and to ground it in the unmatched, authentic perspective of a true legend like Andre Agassi, is a remarkable privilege,” he said.
Added Cummins, “As major tennis fans ourselves, this has been the most fun we’ve had at work in a while.”
