Grant Gustin Addresses The Flash Return In James Gunn’s DCU After Director’s New Comments

Grant Gustin might end up coming back as The Flash in the new DC Universe.
Gusting became famous around the world for leading nine seasons of The Flash as Barry Allen, appearing in several Arrowverse TV shows and the live-action DC TV universe's many crossover events. Gustin's tenure in the role came to an end with the release of The Flash series finale on May 24, 2023, a month before Ezra Miller's The Flash movie debuted in theaters to become a box office bomb. Since then, DC has remained tight-lipped on new projects starring Barry Allen or other versions of the Flash in live-action. However, with fans campaigning for him to join the DCU, Gustin is keeping hopes alive.
On the Awkward Puppets' The Diego Show, Gustin reconfirmed that he would be happy to come back as the Flash in James Gunn's DC Universe.
The actor had already said in the past that he would be open to the idea, as he trusts Gunn as a creator. While Gustin did candidly say that there was a mix of relief and sadness when the Arrowverse's The Flash series came to an end, the beloved actor is ready to come back if Gunn comes calling. Gustin also noted that a lot of DC fans seem to want him to become the Flash of the DCU. Check out Grant Gustin's full quote below:

Gustin's new comments about playing the Flash in the DCU come after Gunn recently touched on the subject. After being asked by a DC fan on Threads about a recent "decent rumor" regarding how Gustin might be coming back to the DCU as a variant of the Flash, not necessarily the same Barry Allen that the actor played for a decade in the Arrowverse, Gunn replied by saying, "Please define decent rumor" and a laughing emoji. As such, it seems like the director was shooting down that specific Gustin Flash return rumor, but that does not mean the actor is not joining the DCU.
After all, in 2024, Gunn was asked by a fan on Threads to cast Gustin in the DCU, as the actor's talent was going to waste. Gunn responded by praising Gustin and commenting on not only how talented the actor, who was then performing on Broadway, was, but also that he would love to work with Gustin in the future. Since then, no project in the DCU's release slate has been announced to feature the Flash and/or Gustin. That said, there is a new DC release that could feature Gustin as the Flash if Gunn ends up deciding to bring him back.
That would be HBO Max's recently-announced The People v. Gorilla Grodd series. Not only was the character part of the Arrowverse, just like Gustin's Flash, but Gorilla Grodd is one of the Flash's comic book villains. As such, in a TV show about Gorilla Grodd possibly having been wrongfully convicted of murder, having the Flash make his DCU debut in a surprise cameo role would make a lot of sense. The timing of Gustin's new comments about being happy to play The Flash again in the DCU will surely lead to many new fan theories and rumors.
