“It is with a broken heart that I share the news that my beloved wife, Renaye and mother to our daughters Jesse and Amy, passed away unexpectedly yesterday, 13 October,” Kramer said.
The musician did not disclose the circumstances surrounding her death.
He also asked the public to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
Kramer said the family would announce arrangements for a celebration of Renaye’s life in due course.
WHO WAS RENAYE KRAMER?
Renaye shared a long history with the celebrated musician, with their relationship stretching back to their childhood in Worcester in the Western Cape.
The couple knew each other before Kramer established himself as one of South Africa’s most recognisable performers.
Renaye also contributed to his creative work over the years, including productions associated with the Kramer-Petersen Songbook and the musical Ver in die Wêreld Kittie.
The couple raised two daughters, Jesse and Amy.
DAVID KRAMER’S CONTRIBUTION TO SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC
Kramer, 75, has spent more than four decades in South African music and theatre, earning recognition for his Afrikaans songs and stage productions.
He worked closely with the late Taliep Petersen on celebrated productions including District Six: The Musical and Kat and the Kings.
Their work helped bring stories about Cape Town’s communities, culture and history to audiences locally and internationally.
In January 2026, the City of Cape Town awarded Kramer and Petersen the Freedom of the City in recognition of their contribution to the city’s cultural heritage.
Kramer received the honour at Cape Town City Hall, while Petersen’s family accepted the award posthumously.
Renaye’s death comes just months after that recognition.
The Kramer family has not yet announced a date for her memorial or celebration of life.
