Manpreet Kaur becomes third Indian to win Asian Games medal in women’s shot put

Manpreet Kaur became the third Indian woman to win an Asiad shot put medal after clinching bronze at the Aichi-Nagoya Games on Friday.
The 36-year-old recorded a best throw of 17.17m to finish behind the Chinese duo of Song Jiayuan and Zhang Linru, who won gold and silver, respectively.
Barbara Webster (1951) and Kiran Baliyan (2023) are the only other Indians to medal in this event. Both had won bronze medals.
Manpreet started slowly, recording a sub-par 16.32m with her first throw. But she worked herself into a good rhythm, improving her mark with each attempt.
She finally breached the 17m mark with her fourth attempt, which all but sealed her bronze medal.
China’s Song lead the contest from the first throw. She recorded a Season’s Best effort (19.40m) with her second throw to assert herself as China won gold in this event at the Asian Games for the 13th consecutive time.
India’s Krishna Jayasankar Menon finished fifth with a best effort of 16.57m.
