KZN beaches get a major Blue Flag boost ahead of summer

Translate

Beachgoers heading to KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) this summer have more internationally recognised options to choose from, with the province’s Blue Flag beaches expanding for the 2026/27 season.

The latest awards recognise beaches that meet stringent standards covering water quality, safety, accessibility, environmental management and environmental education.

The 2026/27 awards were announced by the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) at its National Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards in Hermanus on 8 October.

South Africa received 62 Blue Flag sites for the new season, as the programme marked 25 years of coastal stewardship in the country.

Which KZN beaches have Blue Flag status?

KwaZulu-Natal’s recognised beaches are concentrated along the North and South coasts.

On the KZN South Coast, 11 beaches now have full Blue Flag status for the 2026/27 season, while a further five have pilot status.

Full Blue Flag beaches: KZN South Coast

  • Trafalgar Beach
  • Marina Beach
  • St Michaels-on-Sea Beach
  • Umzumbe Beach
  • Southport Beach
  • Hibberdene Beach
  • Pennington Beach
  • Rocky Bay Beach
  • Preston Beach
  • Bazley Beach
  • Mtwalume Beach

The South Coast’s latest list represents a notable expansion from previous seasons. In 2025/26, the region had eight full Blue Flag beaches, including St Michaels-on-Sea, while several Umdoni beaches were still in the pilot programme.

The move is particularly significant for Umdoni Municipality, which has reported five full Blue Flags for 2026/27, compared with one full Blue Flag in the previous season.

The municipality said the improvement reflects continued work on beach safety, cleanliness, environmental management and service delivery.

Five beaches also have pilot status. These were:

  • Port Edward Beach
  • Umtentweni Beach
  • Scottburgh Beach
  • Lucien Beach
  • Ramsgate Beach

A Pilot Blue Flag means a beach is working towards meeting all the requirements for full Blue Flag status. WESSA describes pilot beaches as sites that do not yet meet every criterion but are working towards achieving full accreditation.

KwaDukuza has four

The KZN North Coast also features prominently in the 2026/27 awards. KwaDukuza Municipality has secured four full Blue Flags for:

  • Salt Rock Main Beach
  • Willard Beach
  • Thompson Bay Beach
  • ClubMed-Tinley Manor

It has also received pilot status for Tinley Manor Main Beach.

The municipality retained its four full Blue Flags from the previous season, although the sites have changed, with ClubMed-Tinley Manor joining the full-status list.

What does a Blue Flag actually mean?

Blue Flag status is more than an award for a beach that looks good in photographs.

The programme assesses beaches against requirements relating to water quality, environmental management, safety and services, accessibility and environmental education.

Water quality is a particularly important component, with bathing water required to be tested regularly and information made available to beachgoers. Beaches must also provide appropriate safety measures, facilities and information.

The accreditation is renewed annually, meaning beaches have to continue meeting the required standards rather than simply retaining the award indefinitely.

A boost for KZN’s summer tourism

The awards come ahead of the busy summer holiday period, when KZN’s beaches are expected to attract large numbers of domestic and international visitors.

KwaDukuza Mayor Siduduzo Gumede said the municipality expects increased activity at its Blue Flag beaches through mid-January 2027, linking the awards to tourism, investment, and job creation.

For the South Coast, the growing number of accredited beaches is similarly significant for a region where coastal tourism is a major part of the local economy.
