God of War Laufey screenshot sparks intense fan speculation over Kratos story in Ancient Greece

A newly revealed screenshot from God of War Laufey has given fans newfound hope for a Hellenic return for Kratos.

Laufey, set to release early next year, is the first game in the series not to feature Kratos as a protagonist, instead showcasing his wife Faye's journey through the afterlife.

But amid a set of recently released screenshots, we see an image of Faye and Kratos together in what appears to be an Ancient Greek temple (or regular Greek to them, we suppose).

If you've been paying attention to the God of War series, then you'll be well aware that Faye is dead, separated from Kratos, and has not been in Greece together for a long, long time.

Of course, Kratos has already appeared in the trailers for the game, though how or why he appears for Faye remains unknown, and it's clear that he can't see or sense her.

So, while the screenshot all but confirms that Kratos will make recurring appearances in Laufey, the fact we don't know what version of Kratos this is and when he is from rears several more questions.

Will Faye visit an Ancient Greek part of the Everywhen – the game's afterlife setting – and if so, does that mean iconic characters from the original trilogy will also be making an appearance?

While fans are desperate for a new God of War game to return to Greece, the fact Sony Santa Monica is remaking the original Greek Trilogy suggests that a new Greek title is perhaps unlikely.

But if Laufey is set to give us a glimpse at what that could look like, that's going to have to be good enough for us.

And besides, even if we're going to have to wait until February to find out what's going on between Faye and Kratos, at the very least we can enjoy how incredible the graphics are for the next five months.
