Complete Sports Celebrity Workout 2026: ‘Less Than 10% Of Nigerians Work Out At Gyms, But There Are Alternatives’ — Fitness Instructor Ghamis
Fitness instructor, King James Ghamis, has urged Nigerians to embrace alternative ways of exercising, noting that fewer than 10 per cent of the population go to the gym to work out.
Speaking at the third edition of the Complete Sports Celebrity Workout 2026 in Lagos, Ghamis attributed the low participation rate partly to the demands of daily life, particularly in the busy city of Lagos, while emphasising that people can stay fit through simple exercises at home and other accessible locations.
The event took place on Saturday, 10 October 2026, at Muri Okunola Park, Victoria Island, Lagos, where Ghamis led a Functional Fitness session.

According to the fitness instructor, the challenges of balancing work and other daily activities often prevent people from developing a consistent exercise routine.

“Over the years, the percentage of people that go to the gym is still not up to 10 per cent of the whole population,” Ghamis told Completesports.com in an interview after the event.
“So, we encourage people to work out. It’s not necessarily about going to the gym. You can work out at home, you can go to the stadium, you can join a fitness club, or you can dance.
“The issue is the culture of exercising. In Lagos, for instance, there is the daily hustle. You leave your house early and return late. For most people, you might not have the discipline to work out. So, I think it’s about the hustle in Lagos.”

Ghamis Explains Benefits Of Functional Fitness
Speaking on the importance of Functional Fitness, Ghamis described it as a simple form of exercise that people can easily incorporate into their daily routines.
“Functional workout is a very basic workout. It’s important to make people understand that fitness is something you can do at home. It’s about your body weight, like converting your body weight into a machine.

“So, basically, what you do at home is sit and stand, pick up objects and work on your lower back. That’s the whole essence of Functional Fitness,” he said.

Ghamis added that exercise routines should be tailored to accommodate people of different fitness levels, rather than expose participants to unnecessarily strenuous movements.
“Exercise prescription is about taking people along. Everybody should be able to do what you are doing, so we are not doing advanced routines that can have an impact on the shoulders or joints.

“So, it’s a very simple workout — basic squats that we do at home, which are functional, and picking up objects from the floor. So, that’s it,” he added.
