Preity Zinta has opened up about why she rarely watches her own films after they are completed. Despite having acted in more than 50 films over a career spanning three decades, the actor admitted that watching herself on screen still makes her uncomfortable and often leaves her second-guessing her performances.
Preity discussed the experience while promoting her upcoming Hindi action-comedy ‘Vibe’, directed by Kunal Kemmu. The film marks another chapter in her return to Bollywood and is her second film since making her comeback to the industry. The actor spoke about her experience alongside debutant Vanshika Dhir, who is also part of ‘Vibe’. In an interview with Hindustan Times, the two actors reflected on seeing themselves on screen and the different emotions that come with being part of a film.
Vanshika Dhir opens up about her acting debut
For Vanshika Dhir, who is entering the film industry with ‘Vibe’, seeing herself on a film poster and on the big screen was an unfamiliar experience. While details about her character have largely been kept under wraps, the debutant has featured prominently in the film’s promotional material. Vanshika recalled being surprised when she first saw herself on the poster and later watched herself on the big screen during the trailer launch.
She also admitted to experiencing impostor syndrome as she begins her acting journey.“I didn’t expect to see myself on the poster. I am just happy I made it there. At the trailer launch, when I saw myself on the big screen, I could not believe it. I had some kind of impostor syndrome. I feel that feeling is going to stay for quite a while,” said Vanshika.
Preity Zinta says she avoids watching her own films
Preity said she could relate to Vanshika’s feelings, revealing that even decades of experience have not made it easier for her to watch herself perform.
The actor’s comments highlight how self-criticism can continue even after years of experience in front of the camera. For Preity, watching a completed performance appears to bring the focus back to what she could have done differently rather than allowing her to simply experience the film as an audience member.“I can never judge myself on screen. I don’t see myself on screen. Once my movie is done, I don’t watch it. I feel very awkward sitting through.
It’s not like I don’t want to watch, but I cannot. I find it very unusual. I find myself thinking: ‘I could have done this better’.”
Preity Zinta takes on action in ‘Vibe’
In ‘VIBE’, Preity plays Madam H, a super spy who recruits two ordinary men for a secret mission. Kunal Kemmu and Sparsh Shrivastava play the two characters drawn into her character’s world. The role also required Preity to participate in several physically demanding action sequences. The actor wanted to perform as much of the action herself as possible, while acknowledging that filming stunts involves considerable technical planning and coordination.
The action-comedy gives Preity an opportunity to explore a different kind of role as she continues her return to Hindi cinema.
‘VIBE’ releases in theatres on September 18
