Marvel's Wolverine: Release date, gameplay details and trailer

Translate

While GTA 6 is getting all the plaudits, plenty of us are just as excited about the upcoming Marvel's Wolverine release date.

After years of leaks and delays, Insomniac Games is finally back, and after the hit that was 2023's Spider-Man 2, Wolverine is looking incredible.

While we're sad not to see Hugh Jackman take on the role, Liam McIntyre is shaping up to be an incredible alternative.

With that, let's take a look at the Marvel's Wolverine release date, gameplay and story details, pre-orders, editions and more!

When is the Marvel's Wolverine release date?

The Marvel's Wolverine release date is scheduled as 15 September 2026, PlayStation has confirmed.

PlayStation took to social media to confirm the exciting news about the Wolverine PS5 release date:

Which consoles and platforms can play Marvel's Wolverine?

Wolverine in the Wolverine Game.

Wolverine Game.

Marvel's Wolverine will launch exclusively on PlayStation 5. This is due to the game being developed by Insomniac Games, which is owned by Sony.

As a result, we wouldn't expect it to ever be ported to Xbox Series X/S or Nintendo Switch, nor PC, as Sony has reportedly stepped away from PC ports. As such, the best way to play the game will be on a PS5 Pro.

Can I pre-order Marvel's Wolverine?

Yes! Pre-orders for Marvel's Wolverine are now live.

You can pick up your copy directly from the PlayStation Store.

Players who pre-order the game will earn these pre-order bonuses:

  • Early Access Suit: Classic Brown
  • Early Access Claws: Reflective Claws
  • 1 Additional Technique Point
  • 4 PS Avatars

Marvel's Wolverine editions

At the time of writing, there are two editions of the game: Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition.

The Standard Edition will only get you a copy of the game, as well as the above pre-order bonuses.

On the other hand, the Digital Deluxe Edition will get you the following rewards:

  • Marvel's Wolverine Digital Game
  • All Pre-Order Bonuses
  • 5x Exclusive Suits
    • Incredible
    • Savage
    • Age of Apocalypse
    • Night Hunt
    • New Leather
  • 5x Exclusive Claws
    • Smooth-Edged Claws
    • Hollow Blade Claws
    • Thick Claws
    • Serrated Spine Claws
    • Tapered Claws
  • 3 Addition Technique Points

Will Marvel's Wolverine come to PS4?

No, Marvel's Wolverine is not expected to come to PS4 at any point.

This is a next-gen project specifically built for the PS5, so the console will be the only place to play Marvel's Wolverine at launch and for the foreseeable future.

While gameplay details were fairly few and far between for a long time, June 2026's PlayStation State of Play gave us our best look yet at Marvel's Wolverine, with a brand-new extended gameplay trailer.

Logan is shown teaming up with fellow mutant Jean Grey, who combine their strengths to defeat a gang of Reavers armed with weapons and cybernetic implants.

Wolverine's combat is literally hack and slash, using special moves called 'Techniques' such as Tornado Spin and Bull Rush to take them down.

Jean uses her telekinetic abilities alongside him, opening up 'Critical Strikes', which are finishing moves that Wolverine can execute during a fight.

Every time Wolverine attacks, parries and kills, his Rage builds up. This makes his attacks stronger, and also activates Healing Factor to repair his body.

This fighting section is followed by a set piece in which Logan follows the escaping Reavers on a motorcycle, slashing tyres to take out trucks and flinging enemies onto the road.

He can also leap between the roofs of vehicles, taking out the enemies on top – a mix of normal enemies and powerful Brutes.

The trailer cuts out with Logan jumping towards a machine gun, soaking up bullets while his Healing Factor patches him up.

This is the gameplay we've seen so far, but Insomniac has shared a bit about what we can expect from the game as a whole, too:

"We aim to deliver the ultimate Wolverine fantasy built on Insomniac staples like fast, fluid and ferocious combat; exhilarating, action-packed set pieces; robust accessibility features; and a gripping story that taps into the core tenets of one of the most compelling comic book characters of all-time.

"We're breaking new ground with Wolverine, yes, but our penchant for telling stories about heroes overcoming colossal odds is as strong as ever. We're eager to explore Logan's story with you and tap into his signature spin on heroism which is much darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac."

We wouldn't expect Marvel's Wolverine to have any formal links to the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies or the pre-existing X-Men films from the Fox days, either.

On the official product page, it says: "As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be. "

Marvel Games seems to be doing its own thing, so the best you can hope for is probably a collection of skins/outfits/costumes that pay tribute to Wolvie's big-screen outings.

If you were hoping for Hugh Jackman to reprise his role, then you're out of luck. Instead, fellow Australian actor Liam McIntyre will take on the job. Players might recognise him from Gears 5 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.

What happened with the Wolverine leaks?

Insomniac Games suffered a data breach in December 2023, with ransomware group Rhysida demanding around £2 million in bitcoin. When the studio decided to not comply, the hackers released details of the studio's future plans by uploading them to the web.

As first reported by CyberDaily, this included several games in the works, budgets and sensitive data relating to Insomniac's employees. Insomniac subsequently released the following statement:

"Thank you for the outpouring of compassion and unwavering support. It’s deeply appreciated. We’re both saddened and angered about the recent criminal cyberattack on our studio and the emotional toll it’s taken on our dev team. We have focused inwardly for the last several days to support each other.

"We are aware that the stolen data includes personal information belonging to our employees, former employees and independent contractors. It also includes early details about Marvel’s Wolverine for PS5. We continue working quickly to determine what data was impacted. This experience has been extremely distressing for us.

"We want everyone to enjoy the games we develop as intended. However, like Logan... Insomniac is resilient. Marvel’s Wolverine continues as planned. The game is in early production and will no doubt greatly evolve throughout development, as do all our plans.

"While we appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm, we will share official information about Marvel’s Wolverine when the time is right. On behalf of everyone here, thank you for your ongoing support during this challenging time."

The gameplay trailer comes four years after Sony unveiled the first trailer for Marvel's Wolverine for PS5 in September 2021. It shows Logan in a seedy bar of some sort before unleashing his Adamantium claws. The trailer is accompanied by the song The Dark End of the Street by James Carr.
