8 Underrated X-Men Who'd Be the Most Powerful Member of Any Other Team

The X-Men have introduced countless memorable mutants who are capable of overwhelming their opponents thanks to the power they possess. However, some of the franchise’s most formidable characters have been relegated to the sidelines and are often overshadowed by the series’ most prominent and fan-favorite characters. Even so, with their power, these mutants stand out as strong forces in their own right.

While they may not have countless moments to shine like X-Men’s central characters, that doesn’t mean that they’re any less complex or memorable. On any other team, these underrated X-Men would easily stand out among the most powerful thanks to their destructive capabilities, versatility, strength, or specialized training and powers that elevate them to a whole other level.

Omerta

Omerta, or Paulie Provenzano, first appeared in Uncanny X-Men #392 in 2001. He is a former U.S. Marine who attempted to join the mafia after his powers awakened, until Jean Grey intervened and offered a better path. His powers grant him an extraordinarily dense, virtually unbreakable molecular structure that allows him to withstand bullets and explosives, as well as superhuman strength.

While he is a largely forgotten member of the X-Men, he still stands out for his near-invincibility. In a fight, it would be exceptionally difficult for an opponent to take him down, even with massive amounts of firepower. Given his strength and durability, on any other team, he would stand out as a heavy hitter and a force to be reckoned with.

Marrow

While she was first introduced in Cable #15 in 1994 as Sarah, Marrow became more widely known following her appearance in 1995 in X-Men Prime. Raised among the Morlocks below New York City, Marrow is a mutant who can rapidly grow, manipulate, and shed her own bones at will, turning her body into a full arsenal of weapons and armor. Beyond that, her mutation also grants her enhanced resilience and accelerated healing.

Given her mutation, Marrow is extremely versatile in combat as she can use every part of her body as a weapon, whether it's close-range blades or pointed projectiles, or cover herself in powerful defensive armor. With the ability to seamlessly transition from offense to defense, close range to long range, paired with her regeneration, Marrow stands out as someone who would be difficult to get the upper hand over.

Ink

Ink stands out as an incredibly unique member of the X-Men because he’s not actually a mutant. Making his debut in Young X-Men #1 in 2008, Eric Gitter gains his abilities from his tattoos created by the mutant Leon Nunez, with each design granting him a different power. Through them, Ink acquires superhuman strength, flight, healing, telepathy, explosive abilities, the ability to induce illness, and more.

Given his unusually broad collection of powers, Ink is exceptionally adaptable and would shine if only given the time to do so. Since he isn’t confined to a single role, he can function as pretty much anything as long as he has the tattoo for it. With that versatility, he can fill gaps in any team he takes part in and would likely become one of the most indispensable members, making him a valuable character that doesn’t get the recognition he deserves in X-Men.

Rockslide

Rockslide was introduced in the New Mutants in 2003 as Santo Vaccarro, a brash student whose mutation initially transformed him into a massive body of solid rock. Since then, his abilities have grown to let him shatter and reconstruct his body, detonate himself, and more, making him far more than a durable stone character.

He has great offensive potential and durability, which could easily make him one of the most powerful members of any other team.

With all that in mind, Rockslide stands out as a seemingly impossible opponent to defeat. He already has immense strength and a durable body, but to top it all off, he can rebuild himself from nearby rock and survive even if his physical form is destroyed. Paired with the fact that he can turn his body into explosive and projectile weapons, he has great offensive potential and durability, which could easily make him one of the most powerful members of any other team.

Strong Guy

Guido Carosella, also known as Strong Guy, made his debut in The New Mutants #29 in 1985 as a bodyguard for the mutant musician Lila Cheney. He possesses the ability to absorb kinetic energy from any impact and convert it into temporary increases in physical strength and mass; however, he must release this energy within 90 seconds or risk severe strain or potentially permanent body distortion.

It’s because of this limitation and years of retaining energy that Strong Guy is permanently bulky, but that said, his imposing appearance is arguably an advantage. While underrated in the X-Men, Strong Guy’s ability to gain strength from any attack makes him a force to be reckoned with. With sufficient levels of stored energy, his strength can reach into the range of 50 to 100 tons, placing him among the franchise’s most formidable characters.

Mimic

Calvin Rankin debuted in The X-Men #19 in 1966, making Mimic one of the earliest additions to the franchise’s roster of mutants. With his power, he can copy the abilities, physical attributes, skills, and knowledge of anyone around him. On top of that, he has five permanent baseline powers of the original five X-Men, including flight, superhuman strength, optic blasts, cryokinesis, and telekinesis, making Mimic incredibly versatile.

Decades since his debut, Mimic has become a rather obscure character in the franchise, but no less formidable. With his mutation, Mimic becomes more dangerous when he is near other powerful heroes, giving him more skills and knowledge to work with thanks to the invisible waves he can emit to scan those near him. On any other team, it would be difficult to outclass Mimic, as he can adapt to practically any situation.

Dead Girl

Dead Girl debuted in X-Force #125 in 2002 as Moonbeam. She was originally an aspiring actress whose mutation manifested after she was killed by a fellow actor, which allows her to communicate with spirits and command them, temporarily resurrect the dead, manipulate her own severed body parts, and rebuild her body, even if it's blown to pieces. Since she is already dead, it's impossible to permanently kill her.

Dead Girl’s greatest advantage is that defeating her physical form doesn’t do much, since she can recover after practically any attack while continuing to fight with any detached limb. Paired with the fact that she can call upon the dead for assistance, Dead Girl is an extraordinarily dangerous character. While she may be overlooked in the X-Men, that doesn’t mean that she’s weak or insignificant, and her abilities and resilience prove it.

Tempus

Eva Bell, better known as Tempus, first appeared in All-New X-Men #1 in 2012 as an Australian teenager whose mutant abilities initially manifested through accidentally freezingtime. With her power, she can create Time Bubbles that stop, slow, or accelerate time, and as she grows, her abilities eventually allow her to time travel as well.
