KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed his condolences over the death of secondary student Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairoul Faisal, whose body was found with injuries at a school in Yong Peng, Johor, yesterday.

In a Facebook post, the prime minister extended his condolences to the family of the Form Four student and prayed that they would be given strength and fortitude in facing the difficult ordeal.

Anwar also directed the authorities to conduct an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to determine the cause and establish what actually happened.

“If there are elements of a crime, firm action must be taken in accordance with the law,” he said in the post.

Anwar said the safety of children was a shared responsibility and that the government would not compromise on ensuring their safety and wellbeing.

In the incident at about 5.30pm yesterday, Irene Sofiya, 16, was found dead with injuries on her body, believed to have been murdered in a secondary school hall in Yong Peng.

The victim was found by her grandmother and a friend who went to the school after she failed to return home despite her extra classes having ended. — Bernama
