SUNGAI PETANI: A 77-year-old man is missing after the car he was driving skidded into a river along Jalan Lubuk Segintah-Lubuk Kawah here early this morning.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been launched for Mat Yusof Hashim of Jalan Masjid Felda Teloi Timur.

Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said police received a call from a member of the public about 1am today informing them of an accident involving a car that had skidded into a river.

He said preliminary investigations showed that Mat Yusof was driving from Jalan Kuala Ketil towards Teloi Timur Felda.

"The victim is believed to have lost control of the car before it skidded into the river. Initially, the victim was believed to have drowned along with the vehicle.

"However, after the submerged car was lifted from the river using a crane, an inspection found that the driver was not inside the vehicle," he said in a statement today.

Hanyan said firefighters continued the SAR operation in the area around the river, while the car was sent to the Kuala Muda Traffic police station.

"The status of the victim remains unknown at this time," he said.
