Minister calls for integrated approach to slum area rehabilitation

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Housing and Settlement Area Minister Maruarar Sirait affirmed that addressing slum areas must be carried out in an integrated and comprehensive manner.
He said the success of slum area handling cannot be measured solely by changes in the physical condition of buildings. Improving residents' quality of life is also an important aspect that needs attention, including through strengthening the local economy.
"We are also improving the economy. We invited ladies bankers and PNM (state-run microfinance company) to provide mentoring for MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) in Menteng Tenggulun," Sirait said in a statement here on Tuesday.
He cited the ministry's experience in handling the slum area in Menteng Tenggulun, Central Jakarta. According to him, the handling in the area was carried out using a comprehensive approach, ranging from home renovation to neighborhood improvement.
"In Menteng Tenggulun, we renovated around 150 homes, but it was not just the houses we improved, we also improved the surrounding environment, the roads, and even the waste management," Sirait said.
He said the integrated approach needs to be continuously developed through cross-sector collaboration and the involvement of various parties.
According to him, the government cannot work alone in addressing slum area issues, which are linked to various aspects of community life.
The minister also affirmed that the government continues to push for the provision of housing for people who do not yet own a home, while also addressing homes that are in uninhabitable condition.
"The government is encouraging the provision of housing through various subsidized schemes, both landed and vertical housing. Meanwhile, for those who already own a home but it is uninhabitable, assistance is provided through the Home Renovation Program," he said.
