Sermon: Think of the Bible as a long letter from God
If someone wrote you a letter, you would be eager to read it. Think of the Bible as a long letter from God. If you have not already experienced it, learn what many others have experienced. Sacred scripture is God’s way of speaking to you. Read at least one verse every day. Before you begin, you can tell God: “What do you want to say to me today?”
Pay special attention to the four gospels. They are the heart of the Bible. If you want to know the words that Jesus spoke, you need to read those four books.
Matthew’s gospel emphasises the way Jesus is the son of David—the King of kings who will rule over all creation forever and lead us into God’s kingdom. Mark wants his gospel to prove to you that Jesus is the Son of God. He focuses on the miracles that Jesus worked. Luke chose to highlight the mercy of God. His gospel contains those wonderful parables about the Prodigal Son and the Good Samaritan, plus the story about Jesus telling the Good Thief: “Today you will be with me in paradise.”
John’s gospel is the most mysterious. You realise this in the first verse when he says: “In the beginning was the Logos... the Word of God who became flesh.” It is indeed mysterious that a person who is equal to God becomes one of us so that we can become children of God.
It is the greatest truth about God’s plan. He wants to lift us up, even above the angels. There is something very mysterious here. God did not become like an angel. Instead he became a man.
