India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty suffered a shock defeat in the men’s doubles event in badminton at the Asian Games 2026 on Friday.
The Indian pair, who are the defending champions, lost to Thailand’s Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Peeratchai Sukphun (21-12, 19-21, 14-21) in the opening round at the Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium.
It looked routine early on as Satwik-Chirag dominated the proceedings and pocketed the opening game.
But the Thai duo, ranked 33rd in the world, found their groove in the second game, working their way to a four-point lead (17-13). Satwik-Chirag managed to bring it back to 19-18, but couldn’t prevent their opponents from clinching the second game.
Teeraratsakul and Sukphun rode the wave in the third game and were even managed to dominate their illustrious opponents on the way to a memorable win.
Satwik-Chirag were part of the Indian side which had earlier won the bronze medal in men’s team event.
