FOUNDRY DATA: Demand pushed production on some TSMC lines to full utilization, while Samsung’s market share of 5.9 percent dropped, TrendForce said

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co’s (TSMC, 台積電) foundry market share edged up to 72.5 percent in the second quarter from 72.3 percent in the previous quarter, propelled by robust artificial intelligence (AI) and smartphone chip revenue, data compiled by market researcher TrendForce Corp (集邦科技) showed yesterday.

TSMC’s revenue last quarter grew 12 percent sequentially to US$40.2 billion, outpacing the 11.5 percent average growth among the world’s top 10 foundry companies, the researcher said.

Combined revenue of the top 10 is expected to grow further this quarter from US$53.49 billion last quarter, supported by strong demand and price hikes, it said.

The increased demand has pushed TSMC’s 5-nanometer and 3-nanometer production lines to full utilization, while boosting the firm’s average selling prices and wafer shipments, the Taipei-based research company said.

Samsung Electronics Co ranked a distant second, with a market share of 5.9 percent, down from 6.5 percent in the prior quarter, it said.

Its revenue rose 1.8 percent quarterly to US$3.26 billion on higher 5-nanometer chip prices and ramp-up of high-bandwidth memory chips, TrendForce said.

Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (中芯) was third with a 5.4 percent market share, up from 5.1 percent in the first quarter, it said.

The Chinese company’s revenue jumped 20 percent quarter-on-quarter to US$3 billion, thanks to seasonal inventory buildup for chips used in PCs, notebook computers and consumer electronics, as well as increased shipments of AI peripheral chips and server networking chips, along with price hikes in memory chips, it said.

Hsinchu-based United Microelectronics Corp (聯電) and US-based GlobalFoundries Inc were unchanged in fourth and fifth respectively, with market shares of 3.9 percent and 3.2 percent, TrendForce said.

Ranking from sixth to 10th were China’s HuaHong Group (華虹), Israel-based Tower Semiconductor Ltd, Hsinchu-based Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp (世界先進), Chinese firm Nextchip Co (合肥晶合) and Hsinchu-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (力積電), the researcher said.
