Neagley's Biggest Spinoff Problem Is Trying To Replace Jack Reacher

Even though there were many concerns surrounding how the Neagley spin-off would turn out, the new addition to the Reacher franchise has proven to be quite compelling. It is driven by a gripping mystery and even gives a glimpse of Neagley's backstory and the past events that shaped her as a person. Neagley season 1 also ends with a memorable pay off that connects it to Reacher.
However, a closer look at the spin-off show's story and its portrayal of its main character reveals one major flaw. Instead of giving Neagley her own unique identity as a character, the series seems to lean a little too much into portraying her as Jack Reacher's replacement. Maria Sten does an incredible job of capturing everything from Neagley's genius deductive abilities to her vulnerabilities.
As the Reacher spin-off show progresses, though, it becomes hard not to notice how she seems a little too similar to the Alan Ritchson character. On paper, Neagley should be more or less like the female version of Jack Reacher. But the Prime Video detective series cannot risk leaning too much into this angle because it risks making Neagley feel too derivative.
Neagley's Spinoff Amplifies Her Similarities To Jack Reacher
Even in Lee Child's Jack Reacher books, Neagley almost comes off as a "female Jack Reacher." However, in Reacher's previous seasons, a clear line was drawn between her and the Alan Ritchson character. For instance, in season 2, it was established that she is a lot chirpier and more openly witty than Reacher.
Instead of merely dropping cold one-liners like Reacher, she seemed vocal during confrontations and even openly shared her insights on the overarching mysteries. Even her overall personality seemed to have way more color as the show hinted at her obsession with eating cereal and her tendency to be far more empathetic than Reacher.
Prime Video's Neagley spin-off almost seems to rewrite these elements by making her seem more closed off and brooding. There is one sequence where we see her love for cereal all over again, and the series even shows how she keeps action figures in her apartment. Beyond that, however, her "fun side" seems significantly diluted in the spin-off. She seems a lot like Reacher instead of having her own distinct identity.
Neagley & Reacher Needed To Be More Distinct
There is an intriguing scene towards Reacher season 3's ending moment where Neagley playfully nudges the Alan Ritchson character. She says that she understands why he does what he does. Noticing a pattern in his crime-solving endeavors, she highlights how he cares little about putting things right or protecting innocents. Instead, he hates the "big, powerful, smug sons of b**ches who think they can just get away with things."

This scene perfectly highlights how Reacher and Neagley are nothing like each other. While Reacher is driven by his hatred for powerful people who misuse their influence, Neagley's search for justice is often propelled by her empathy for innocents. As seen in Reacher, she also helps the Alan Ritchson character voice his inner monologue, which is why she is not supposed to be as quiet as him.
Surprisingly, though, instead of building on these pre-established aspects of her characterization, the Neagley spin-off tries to make her Reacher 2.0. Considering how successful Reacher's winning formula has been, it makes sense that Neagley's creators wanted to play it safe by making the spin-off similar to Jack Reacher.
However, moving forward, the spin-off should focus more on the elements that make Neagley more distinct as a detective character. Hopefully, as the Prime Video franchise progresses, both Neagley and Reacher will attempt to be different shows instead of featuring too many overlaps between the two titular leads.
