The best fantasy series on Prime Video is officially coming to an end in 2028. Prime Video's fantasy TV catalog is one of the biggest in the modern streaming era, both in the number of projects in the genre and the sheer size, scale, and budget of some of them. The biggest example is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which, as of 2026, is the most expensive TV show ever produced, with that budget showing up in every frame.

As Prime Video gears up for the release of The Rings of Power season 3, fantasy fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of more huge Middle-earth adventures on the small screen. Another massive fantasy adventure on Prime Video was The Wheel of Time; while not quite produced to the same scale as The Rings of Power, it certainly had an epic tone as it brought Robert Jordan's novel series to life. The Wheel of Time, however, was not successful enough with general audiences to warrant a continuation, which cannot be said for The Rings of Power.

That said, even the Lord of the Rings TV show is somewhat divisive among audiences, especially those well-versed in J.R.R. Tolkien's original works. Among this vast array of huge fantasy TV shows that do not quite hit home unanimously with both audiences and critics, one stands out as an outlier: The Legend of Vox Machina. The animated show, based on Critical Role's tabletop Dungeons & Dragons campaign, consists of four seasons and holds an incredible 100% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning that, since its 2021 debut, it has not spawned a single negative review.

If anything can be classed as a true 10/10 fantasy show on Prime Video, it is The Legend of Vox Machina. In 2028, though, the show will officially end for good. Work is currently underway on the fifth season of the show, set to feature the titular team trying to stop the reign of the Whispered One, an evil lich god hell-bent on ruling the world. This follows directly from its fantastic fourth season, which ended in June 2026. Given the near two-year gap between seasons 3 and 4, the same gap can be assumed before season 5 releases in 2028, officially concluding Prime Video's best fantasy series.

The Legend Of Vox Machina Is One Of The Most Impressive Fantasy Adaptations

Despite the disappointment that The Legend of Vox Machina is coming to an end, it will endure as one of the most impressive fantasy adaptations of all time. A big factor in this is the sheer length of material that was recorded during the Critical Role campaign on which the show is based. Critical Role's Vox Machina campaign was over 400 hours long, which had to be adapted into five seasons of TV with a tighter narrative structure, condensed but no less effective character arcs, and a satisfying dramatic and emotional core.

Based on the audience and critical reception to The Legend of Vox Machina, one would think this proved an easy task. However, it was surely anything but, rendering the final product even more impressive than first thought. Beyond that, The Legend of Vox Machina also knew when it was best to make changes to the original Critical Role narrative, which, typically in fantasy adaptations specifically, like the aforementioned The Rings of Power, can prove to be controversial. With Vox Machina, though, no controversy was found.

Finally, The Legend of Vox Machina knows not to outstay its welcome. With the wealth of content available from Critical Role, it could have been easy and even tempting to stretch The Legend of Vox Machina across 10-15 seasons. Nonetheless, the writing team and those involved from Critical Role knew when it was best to conclude the show with the two-season Whispered One arc. Combining all of these aspects, which any typical fantasy adaptation would find difficult to do correctly, The Legend of Vox Machina is easily one of the most impressive shows of its ilk.

The Legend Of Vox Machina Makes Some Big Hollywood Failures Worse

In fact, The Legend of Vox Machina is so good that it makes some broader Hollywood failures even worse. The biggest of these failures is the inability to produce any notable large-scale fantasy franchise set within the vast framework of Dungeons & Dragons. There have been several attempts, with The Legend of Vox Machina proving to be the only one worthy of a continuation. Granted, 2023's Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was a great movie, but it sadly did not find the audience it needed to warrant a sequel.

Regardless, The Legend of Vox Machina proves that the many realms of Dungeons & Dragons are exceptional settings for fantasy stories that can truly resonate with audiences and critics. Despite its success, though, Hollywood is yet to catch on. This makes the ending of The Legend of Vox Machina in 2028 all the more bittersweet; it is a fantastic fantasy show with countless great aspects, but upon its conclusion, it will mark the end of an era for the best of its kind.
