Uhuru Kenyatta Insists The Late Raila Odinga Won The 2022 Presidential Election

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has asserted that the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga won the 2022 presidential election, dismissing persistent allegations that his administration failed to adequately support the opposition chief’s campaign.

Referring to Odinga by his popular moniker “Baba,” Kenyatta stated that his political camp deployed all available resources to secure an Azimio la Umoja victory in the August 2022 polls.

“Na kura akapata, na mimi mpaka wa leo najua ya kwamba yeye ndiye alishinda hiyo kura (He got the votes, and to this day I know that he won that election),” Kenyatta said, adding that his allies were fully aware of how the post-election landscape unfolded and remained determined to prevent a repeat of those events in future contests.

The 2022 election results were officially validated on September 5, 2022, when a unanimous seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Martha Koome, upheld William Ruto’s victory following a series of legal challenges filed by Odinga and his coalition.

Kenyatta’s remarks reignite an ongoing debate within the former opposition coalition regarding the operational shortcomings that contributed to Odinga’s loss. In the aftermath of the election, Azimio key figures traded accusations over the mismanagement of campaign logistics, particularly the recruitment, deployment, and payment of polling station agents. Former Azimio chief agent Saitabao Kanchory and Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni previously cited structural breakdowns and electoral mismanagement, while Embakasi East MP Babu Owino questioned Kenyatta’s broader strategy and relationship with Ruto.

The controversy resurfaced in January 2026 when Suna East MP Junet Mohamed defended himself against claims raised by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna regarding unpaid ODM election agents. Mohamed countered that campaign funding meant for agents was managed independently by individuals close to former President Kenyatta out of a restricted office in Nairobi’s Westlands area, bypassing core party officials and candidate structures.
