Halo fans have suddenly found themselves facing one of the biggest turning points in the franchise's 25-year history. Microsoft's recent Xbox restructuring saw hundreds of additional jobs cut and responsibility for the franchise shifted from Halo Studios to Activision, which is expected to assemble a new team to lead its future development. Halo Studios, meanwhile, has reportedly been dramatically downsized and moved into a supporting role.
That leaves plenty of uncertainty surrounding exactly what Halo will become under its new leadership. Halo: Campaign Evolved only launched in July, bringing the original Combat Evolved campaign to modern platforms and PlayStation for the first time, but whatever follows it could now emerge from an entirely different creative structure.
Before that shake-up, however, Halo Studios had already been considering where Master Chief's story could go next. Newly revealed material now offers a tantalizing glimpse at the Halo 7 that might have been.

The most intriguing glimpse at what Halo Studios may have had planned for Halo 7 comes from deep beneath Zeta Halo itself. The newly released material (via Waypoint) focuses partly on a mysterious Containment Facility buried within the ring's substructures, where the Forerunners once researched and stored dangerous specimens inside cylixes. Although Halo Waypoint stops short of officially identifying these images as Halo 7 concept art, the material offers a glimpse at ideas associated with Halo Studios' version of the next mainline game.
The Containment Facility in particular sounds like the setup for a major encounter. It is overseen by a Forerunner submonitor called Adjutant Repose, who suddenly finds himself dealing with arriving Reclaimers, escaped Flood specimens, and an emergency requiring the facility's containment protocols to be activated. The accompanying artwork makes the threat even clearer, showing a Forerunner installation with Flood silhouettes and Offensive Bias represented within the facility.
However, the biggest tease is something Halo Studios deliberately leaves unnamed. Waypoint explains that the facility employs extremely advanced "timelock" technology capable of manipulating localized temporal stasis. That technology is connected to a cage once used for an "ancient, terrible creature" that previously held dominion over the installation when Zeta Halo was still known as Gyre 11. Keeping something contained through technology capable of slowing or accelerating time certainly implies that whatever was imprisoned there was considerably more dangerous than an ordinary Flood enemy.
There is also a very strong clue about the creature's identity. Halo Studios provides new artwork of the Primordial, the ancient Precursor entity eventually associated with the Gravemind and the Flood collective consciousness. Crucially, Waypoint explains that Bornstellar ultimately executed the Primordial using a timelock on Gyre 11, subjecting its physical body to millions of years of aging in moments. Its consciousness nevertheless endured through the Flood hive mind.
That connection makes the Primordial the obvious candidate for the mysterious creature being referenced, although Waypoint never directly says the Containment Facility currently holds the Primordial or that players would have physically fought it. The description could instead be referring to the facility's ancient history and the technology developed around its imprisonment.
Either way, it points toward an especially ambitious direction for Halo Studios' continuation after Infinite. The same material establishes escaped Flood, Promethean forces, Offensive Bias, the Banished, and ancient secrets buried beneath Zeta Halo, suggesting that the abandoned storyline could have dramatically expanded the conflict already established on the ring.
If these concepts really did feed into Halo Studios' plans for Halo 7, the studio may have been preparing to elevate the Flood threat by connecting it directly to one of the darkest figures in Halo's ancient history. With Activision now steering the franchise's next chapter, whether any part of that idea survives remains completely unknown.
