KZN storms and damaging winds: What residents need to know

Translate

KwaZulu-Natal residents should prepare for severe storms and damaging winds that could affect roads, homes and travel across parts of the province.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued two Yellow Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms and damaging interior winds.

Severe storms expected across KZN

SAWS expects severe thunderstorms across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal, except the south coast and adjacent interior.

The storms could damage homes and infrastructure, while heavy rain could flood roads and bridges in vulnerable areas.

Residents should keep an eye on changing weather conditions, particularly when travelling through areas that often experience flooding.

Damaging winds could make driving difficult

SAWS has also warned of damaging interior winds across western and eastern KwaZulu-Natal, as well as eastern parts of the Free State.

Strong winds could damage settlements and make driving difficult, particularly for motorists travelling in high-sided vehicles on exposed routes.

The wind warning will remain in place until Tuesday morning.

Motorists should reduce their speed when conditions worsen, keep a safe following distance and avoid driving through flooded roads.

What parents should prepare for

Parents should keep an eye on weather updates and messages from their children’s schools as the province prepares for severe weather.

Heavy rain and strong winds could make the journey to and from school difficult, particularly in areas prone to flooding.

Parents should allow extra travelling time, check road conditions before leaving home and make sure their children have safe transport arrangements.

They should also remind children to stay away from flooded roads, streams and open areas during thunderstorms.

What residents should watch out for

Residents should watch for rising water levels, fallen branches, flying debris and poor visibility on the roads.

Those living in flood-prone areas should keep important belongings away from places where water could enter their homes.

Authorities have not yet confirmed any damage or disruptions linked to these warnings.

Residents should follow official updates for information on road conditions and emergency responses.
