Senator claims Trump Mobile failed to make required regulatory filings, Washington Post reports

Trump Mobile, which offers smartphones and wireless service under a brand licensed from President Donald Trump’s family business, failed to make legally required disclosures about how it prevents fraud or the use of its services by scammers, Sen. Maggie Hassan has alleged, according to a Washington Post report.

“The Trump family is profiting off of this venture,” Hassan said in a letter dated Thursday to the chief executive of Trump Mobile, a copy of which was obtained by The Washington Post. “Yet unlike Trump-branded vodka and steaks, for example, Trump Mobile operates in an especially sensitive and high-stakes sector.”

The missing filings raise questions about Trump Mobile’s ability to ensure the security of its customers, said Hassan, a ranking Democrat on the Congressional Joint Economic Committee.

The senator’s claims follow previous allegations of questionable business practices at Trump Mobile, which launched last year with a marketing campaign starring two of the president’s sons. In May, the company said it had inadvertently exposed some customer data online, the report added.

On Monday, the cybersecurity news website Straight Arrow News reported that hackers had accessed Trump Mobile’s records and posted personal information of more than 3,000 of its customers online.

The White House has previously said that Trump’s businesses and assets are managed by his family business and do not present a conflict of interest.

The Federal Communications Commission requires telecoms companies to file documents and plans about their operations under federal rules designed to prevent scam calls and verify whether U.S. mobile carriers have international owners that may present national security risks.
