Debibi United President fires back at GoldStars coach over cassava pitch comment

Translate

Debibi United Chief Executive Officer, Alexander Ababio, has hit back at the coach of Bibiani GoldStars Petros Koukouras over his comments about the club's playing pitch, describing the remarks as reckless and unreasonable.

After Gold Stars suffered a 1-0 defeat to Debibi United in the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League Matchday 7, the Greek coach expressed his displeasure over the state of the Debibi Presby Park, describing the playing surface as more suitable for cassava farming than football.

Speaking to Nhyira FM, Mr Ababio expressed his displeasure with Perto’s statement, questioning the reasoning behind the comparison involving cassava cultivation in his country.

“If that’s how they grow cassava in his country [Greek], then I don’t know how they feed them,” Ababio said.

The Debibi United CEO further urged the coach to concentrate on his professional responsibilities instead of making comments he considers inappropriate.

“He should think about his job and stop saying nonsense. It was a reckless and unreasonable statement,” he added.

Ababio's response comes amid discussions surrounding the condition of the playing surface in Ghana football. Petros is one of the foreign coaches who have criticized the state of pitches in the country.

Premier League debutants Debibi United top of the bottom three in the league after eight games with 7 points. On Sunday, Debibi United will face Hearts of Oak at the Debibi Presby Park.

CEO Alexander Ababio said they are focused on remaining in the league.

"Our target is to remain in the league despite our poor start to the season,” he said.
